When Ellie Bosher realised her beloved grandmother wouldn't be able to make her 10th birthday party after having spinal surgery, the little girl was so upset, she wanted to cancel her celebrations.

"With her being a December baby ... we've always made her birthday parties a big deal," mum, Kim Bosher told ABC News of her daughter. "And as the party got closer and closer, she just got really upset one day and started crying."

Given the close bond between Ellie and her Grandma, Rita, Ms Bosher wasn't surprised that her daughter was so distressed. In fact, Ellie's grandmother was present at Ellie's birth - and even cut her umbilical cord.

And so, the mother-of-two came up with a solution to ensure Ellie's special guest could still attend the festivities. The family moved the location of the Alice In Wonderland themed party from a hotel in their hometown of Pulaski, Tennessee, to Rita's nursing home.

"It's just hard to see her having such a hard time and I was just scared that something might happen and this might be one of the last events," Ellie said.

And the best part? The family kept the location change a secret, surprising grandma on the day.

"I loved it," Ellie said. "It was so much fun. My favourite part was pretty much seeing the look on Granny's face."
