If you have some avid little readers at home, then we have good news for you!

Big W have announced that they'll helping Aussie kids add to their bookshelves, launching the fourth edition of their popular Free Books for Kids program.

The program, which starts on August 6, will give away 2.6 million books to Australian families over eight weeks, releasing new titles weekly.

The best part? Absolutely no purchase necessary!

Kristen Linders, BIG W's GM Marketing, said that Aussie families will benefit from the program, this year more than ever.

"It has been a challenging year for Aussie families," Linders said. "Financial pressures of COVID-19 have had a significant impact, with research [conducted online] indicating that over 70 per cent of parents saying it has prevented them from buying books."

Their research found that parents are reading to their children more during the pandemic, and they hope that the Free Books program will help ensure this continues.

BIG W is also working with community groups across Australia for the first time, to make sure more families can access the books, giving away 40,000 books to local hospitals, primary schools and childcare centres.

Big W assures customers that safety is their priority, with hand sanitiser available outside every store, although unfortunately the program won't be available in Victoria for the time being.

"Being a responsible retailer means keeping our customers and teams safe," Linders explained. "We know that some families who shop with us won't be able to or may not feel comfortable visiting our stores over this period as regularly as they would like.'

"We will bring our Free Books back when the time is right," she assured customers. "In the meantime, we encourage our Victorian customers to enjoy the weekly podcasts."

Audio recordings will be available on the 'BIG W Free Books for Kids' podcast which can be found on Acast, Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

May Gibbs', A Ragged Blossom Tale is the first of the books available, with the rest involving a mix of picture books aimed at younger children and full-sized books for older kids.
