Maybe it's the joy the holidays bring, or perhaps it's wanting to race to the end of 2020 (see ya) - but it seems a whopping 61 per cent of Australian families are already getting into the Christmas spirit.

Australian retailer Big W conducted a survey and also revealed that 22 percent of people are already actively planning their festivities.

Head of Everyday and Home at BIG W, Amanda Lunn, says Australians are looking forward to reuniting and reconnecting with family more than ever.

"Whilst we might be enjoying smaller celebrations than we are traditionally used to, customers are already getting excited and preparing early," she explained.

"They want to be organised and ensure they get everything they need to make sure their 2020 celebration will be one to remember."

The research also revealed that almost half of all families are opting for shopping online for their decorations this year, due to the ongoing global pandemic.

BIG W's Christmas expert, Cara Gibson, said the upcoming trends for the holiday season reflect how many Australians will be celebrating this year, and to look 'beyond' the Christmas tree when decorating.

"Many families may be video calling loved ones on Christmas Day, so why not try preparing a beautiful, festive backdrop in your house for the ultimate set up when you call those, you're not able to see," she suggests.

As for those in small spaces, Gibson says to look no further than the walls around you.

"Christmas trees are lovely but can take up a lot of space; a well-placed wall hanging will create a statement just the same for those in apartments."

The 2020 Christmas range launches today at Big W, with excited families already stocking up for the big day.

"I can't wait, I would rather see Christmas stuff then Halloween," one excited mum wrote on Facebook.

"Best time of the year!" declared another.

For all those grinches out there rolling your eyes, apparently putting decorations up early can make you happier - and could indicate you're a nicer person

"In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood," psychoanalyst Steve McKeown told Unilad.

"Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!"
