Australia's 51 most-loved children's books of all time

Australians have revealed an enduring passion for children's picture books in a survey of our favourite books of all time. Over 27,000 votes were cast in the Dymocks annual survey, and 70 per cent of the top 51 books are from the picture book category, proving you're never too old to appreciate a beautifully-written and illustrated book.

Timeless 1969 classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar claimed top spot, finally toppling literary powerhouse Harry Potter from its position as king. The Harry Potter series was at number one for the last three years of the survey, slipping down the ranks to number eight for 2017. In all nine years the survey has run, it has never ranked lower than the number two spot.

The top 10 is almost exclusively populated with picture books, which claim nine of the top positions. Mem Fox also continues her reign as Australia's favourite children's author, with two books in the top 10 and a further two in the top 51. Her book Possum Magic comes in at number three, and has sold more copies than any other Australian children's book.
