It seems Brad Pitt would rather forget the earlier years of his career but he is proud of the fact that he chose Angelina Jolie to be the mother of his children.

Pitt rose to superstardom in the 90s playing roles in movies like Fight Club. He also had a high-profile love affair-turned marriage with Jennifer Aniston. Although he ostensibly had it all, Pitt admits that he felt empty.

"I spent the 90s trying to hide out, trying to duck the full celebrity cacophony," he told Parade magazine.

"I started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out. It started feeling pathetic."

Pitt immersed himself in his career, picking roles where he could find deep inspiration. He was constantly trying to escape his dull reality.

"It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn't living an interesting life myself," Pitt recalled.

Pitt thinks that his union with Aniston contributed to his dreariness.

He began dating Aniston in 1998, with the pair tying the knot in 2000. However, the marriage - which was officially annulled in October 2005 - was not what he thought it was.

"I think that my marriage [to actress Jennifer Aniston] had something to do with it," Pitt explained.

"Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't."

Pitt insists he does not regret his divorce.

Soon after announcing his split from Aniston, he began dating Angelina Jolie. The pair now raise six children together and even though family life is demanding, he is truly happy.

"I'm satisfied with making true choices and finding the woman I love, Angie, and building a family that I love so much. A family is a risky venture, because the greater the love, the greater the loss. That's the trade-off. But I'll take it all. One of the greatest, smartest things I ever did was give my kids Angie as their mom.

"She is such a great mom. Oh, man, I'm so happy to have her."
