Give a gadget that will get the kids outdoors
Drive the kids outdoors this Christmas with our pick of the gadgets.
No doubt there will be plenty of days spent inside these holidays - air conditioner blaring, Wii U running hot. It seems that the weeks spent running under the sprinkler with the kids from down the road are behind us, succeeded by laptops, tablets, mobile phones and any of the myriad of other devices that will connect to the internet.
But if you're breaking out in hives at the thought of the ensuing cabin fever, we have some great technology suggestions that will keep your kids entertained AND get them out of the house. We've got some hot gadgets for every occasion: waterproof, sand-proof, heat-proof and, most importantly, kid-proof!
1. Speedo Aquashot Waterproof Camera ($199.95)
Speedo have perhaps the coolest waterproof camera ever released. At $199.99 RRP it's not cheap, but it's almost bomb proof and will work to a depth of three metres. It even takes video with sound underwater. If that's not in your budget, check out the MiCam series of underwater cameras, which retail from $48.
2. Slip 'n' Slide Extreme (from $39.95)
Remember throwing soap on a blue tarp and pretending it was a Slip 'n' Slide? Now they're more daring than ever! Grab a Slip 'n' Slide Extreme for $39.95 RRP and watch your kids ride the 'boogie' around S-bends with side bumpers. More than one? You'll want the Whamo XL Triple Racer version ($59.95), with three slides and almost no injuries.
3. LeapPad2 ($170)
We did say we would move away from computer screens, but the LeapPad2 has definitely earned a spot on the Christmas must-have list. At around $170, it has heaps of built-in games and educational apps, and it connects to the internet so you can download even more. There are front and rear facing cameras, and with a design that encourages kids to shake, rattle and roll, this is a seriously kid-friendly tablet that can be used at the beach, the park and in the car.
4. Air Hogs Hover Assault - $74.95
Even adults will get off the couch to race remote controlled cars, but the guys at Air Hogs have gone one step better. The Hover Assault ($74.95) doesn't just race around the backyard - it goes off road, jumps in the air and it flies. Get two and take them to the beach for maximum adult competitiveness … that is to say, fun for the whole family.
