Best themed movie marathon ideas for kids

Movie marathons are a really fun way to spend an evening in, and they don’t just have to be just for adults.

Kids love movies too, and you can make a day of it when the weather is bad with plenty of snacks and even themed dress-ups.

Turn your living room into a squishy oasis with mounds of blankets, pillows and beanbags. You can even have a family slumber party and let the kids camp in the living room when they’re tired of watching films.

There are plenty of obvious marathon ideas: The Toy Story movies, Star Wars (for older kids) and the Disney Princess movies all jump out as instant marathon material.

So instead of giving you some obvious ideas, here are some different movie combinations that are guaranteed to create a fun marathon pleasing everyone in the family.

Each list has a number of suggestions, but you can choose just two or three movies depending on the age and attention span of your children.

1. Jungle Movies

This makes a great theme, and luckily there are some excellent movies to accompany it.

Make the kids dress up like their favourite jungle animal, and use animal print blankets and cushion covers to decorate the living room.

Themed snacks could include snake and banana lollies, jungle fruit salad, and spiced jungle popcorn (add a touch of paprika and garlic salt to your popped corn).

Suggested films:

  • The Lion King
  • The Jungle Book
  • Tarzan
  • The Emperor’s New Groove

2. Sea Movies

Another theme that is fun to dress up to and these sea movies will please a range of different movie tastes.

Kids can dress up as pirates, mermaids or sea creatures, and some shell pasta would make a great themed lunch or dinner break.

Use as many blue and yellow blankets and pillows as possible. Throw in some beach towels and you have the perfect set-up for a sea-themed movie marathon.

Suggested films:

  • Lilo and Stitch
  • Finding Nemo
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Shark Tale
  • Ponyo

3. Monsters and Robots Movies

Everyone loves monsters and robots, and thankfully there are plenty of great movies that fit the bill.

To decorate your lounge, go wild with different colours and textures: anything fluffy could be monster material.

Suggested films:

  • Monsters Inc.
  • Wall-E
  • Robots
  • Monsters versus Aliens

4. Animal Movies

These are movies where animals rule, and humans are the inferior species.

Depending on what movies you choose, you can do themed food to accompany them. Spaghetti would be perfect if you select Lady and the Tramp, and party pies would be fitting for Chicken Run – but probably not the chicken variety.

Animal onesies in this case are the perfect movie marathon clothing. If you have pets, why not invite them along for part of the marathon too.

Suggested films:

  • Lady and the Tramp
  • The Aristocats
  • Ratatouille
  • Chicken Run
