Disney unveils Frozen 2 trailer, but viewers ask 'where's Elsa's girlfriend?'

Elsa, Anna, Kristoff and Olaf are going far in the forest to know the truth about an ancient mystery of their kingdom.

Disney has released the first trailer for Frozen 2, the anticipated sequel to the 2013 animated hit.

The nearly two-minute long preview is packed with action, but doesn't elaborate much on the plot or the songs kids will have on repeat come November.

The trailer, which has earned over 8 million views in its first few hours, begins with Elsa (Idina Menzel) running into the ocean, using her ice powers to run over crashing waves. We don't know why she's doing it, but it suggests the second film will take the characters beyond the mountains and fjords of their Arendelle home.

Viewers, however, have become fixated at a glimpse of a possible new female character, with many speculating the mysterious redhead will be Elsa's girlfriend in the film.

The push for Disney to introduce a lesbian couple in the film began soon after plans for the sequel were announced, around the viral hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend. Director Jennifer Lee stoked the online campaign by suggesting she and the film's writers were considering fans' calls.

"Where we're going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we're really conscientious about these things," she told Huffington Post last February.

Star Idina Menzel also said she was "excited that the conversation is happening", but was unsure if the studio was ready to introduce its first "lesbian Disney princess".

Frozen, released in 2013, is among Disney's most successful films, with its $US1.3 billion box office pull ranking as the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The film also earned Oscars for Best Animated Film and Best Original Song for the ubiquitous Let It Go, a song whose message of self-acceptance was embraced as a coming-out anthem among the LGBT community.

The film has also been adapted into a hit Broadway musical, set to open in Sydney in July 2020.

Frozen 2 opens in cinemas on November 22.
