Like many kids of the 80s and 90s, pre-shredded cheese was not a part of my childhood. I did it the hard way, standing there with the grater and a huge hunk of block cheese, occasionally grating a piece of my finger off for my trouble.

Now many people go straight for the shredded options at the supermarket - they're convenient and quick, as well as injury-free. It's a hard fact we go for convenience over better-priced block cheese, but there are some well-priced ones on the market. The trick lies in knowing which ones taste best.

CHOICE has done this work for us, releasing a free report on the best and worst shredded cheese populating the dairy aisles of supermarkets. The consumer advocacy group also has some tips about ideal cheese storage, so make sure you check out the report on that.

CHOICE's three 'curd nerd' cheese experts 'blind-tasted' the 36 kinds, which included mozzarella, cheese blends and 'tasty' cheese products in full-fat, reduced-fat ('light') and lactose-free varieties.

What's clear from the results is that one kind reigns supreme, with the four top-scorers all being mozzarella.

Here are the three deemed the best-tasting by experts, followed by the worst of the pack. Check out the rest of the contenders over at CHOICE.
