Tips for Brave Moms: Become Your Own Boss!

Tips for Brave Moms: Become Your Own Boss! Raising a child is a full-time job, which is why it can seem like everything else in your life needs to be put on hold. And for some time, it does. Plus, making everything work with only one salary can be a bit challenging, especially when there are just so many adorable things you just have to buy for your cute little bundle of joy. However, if you are like me, you might start feeling a bit guilty after a while. As tiring as taking care of a newborn is, I’m still at home basking in all this love, while my husband is out there, working hard to ensure that we have everything we need. Not being able to contribute in any way stressed me out, and occasionally, I could catch myself wondering for how long we can make this work.
Luckily, I did have plenty of support from my family both in the shape of gifts for their granddaughter and in the shape of some free time for myself. I can imagine it being ten times harder if you happen to be on your own. Nevertheless, even with my family’s support, I soon started to feel the need to go back to work – not necessarily the same type of work I used to do, but I needed to feel useful. Plus, if having a baby is not the best time for a fresh start, then when?
So, I began thinking about the ways I could earn more money without sacrificing too much of my time. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and not answer to anybody, but whenever I thought about it, it just seemed too risky. After all, I got a job fairly soon after college, and I can’t say I was unhappy. There just didn’t seem to be enough benefits to leaving something stable and good for something potentially better but unstable.
However, things change when you get a baby, and you definitely start reflecting on your life more. I wanted my daughter to have a happy mom who is proud of what she does. I also wanted to set a good example for her – I wanted her to know that she can be whatever she wants to be. I wanted her to see that if she wants to be the boss in this world, there is nothing standing in her way. So… I started a business.
Now, to go back a bit, I’ve always been called “OCD” for cleaning up any mess as soon as it happens, cleaning my home every single day, making sure everything is spotless, always carrying some wet wipes in my purse, etc. In short, most of my friends think of me as sort of a cleaning freak. On the other hand, I see cleaning as a hobby that helps me relax and keep my family healthy. So, my first thought was – if I’m so good at it, would people actually pay me for it? As it turns out, the answer is yes. In the cleaning world, being a perfectionist is a huge plus, so it wasn’t too long before my business started growing. Honestly, I didn’t really know how to start a cleaning company at first, but everything just fell into place after some time. I found great partners, managed to organize my time, did some research, and I’ve made it work.
And you can as well. The most important advice I can give you is not to be afraid. Yes, becoming a boss can be scary, and it’s definitely not easy – but it’s worth the leap. You surely have a hobby that you’ve always wanted to pursue, whether it’s something artistic like designing clothes or something intellectual like writing. If you’re good at it, have no doubt that there are people who’d appreciate (and pay for!) your skills.
Also, a piece of advice that is equally important – don’t give up. You might not succeed overnight, but becoming your own boss is a process. It took me time as well, and I can’t say for sure that I’d be where I am right now without keeping a positive attitude. Therefore, do your research so you know what to expect and what mistakes to avoid. Also, try to find somebody who is in a similar field, so you can learn from them.
In the end, when you do succeed, you’ll be able to balance your life as it suits you. Sometimes, you’ll have more time for work, and thus, more money for your family’s needs. And when you feel like you need it, you’ll have the freedom to take a break and spend quality time with your family  – which is definitely one of the best things about being your own boss.
