Tips to get longer night sleeps

I'm probably expecting too much here but wondering if anyone has tips to help extend the duration of DS' sleeps at night.

Background is ... I started him on an evening routine of bath/massage/feed sleep about 2-3 weeks ago and can now get him down by 730 or so - sometimes have a few false starts where he'll wake up but generally very good and a great improvement from 930pm or so as he did before.  

I have been then waking him before my own bedtime for what I guess you'd consider a dream feed but also to try to allow me to have to wake just once thru the night (eg 1030, 2-230, 6-630am).  However since going down at the 730 time, the duration between his feeds seems to have shortened to 3 hours or so (had been 4 hours since birth), so we're 1030-1100, 130-200,  430-5am).

I have also tried not waking him for that "dream feed" - in which case he wakes naturally around midnight then again at 3 etc

Any tips on how I can extend his sleeps to just one wake up for me ? And ultimately none ?
Or is it futile especially at this early stage ?

He settles brilliantly after each feed and always has - and is breast fed exclusively, everything else great.

He could be having a growth spurt and that's why he is waking more often. If he settles well after a feed I wouldn't mind the night feeds, but I'm not a routine person and don't mind night feeds with such a young baby.

If he's settling well for sleeps there's not much you can do. Even an older child who's not settling I don't think there is much you can do!

Just follow his lead. When DD was about that age I noticed that her 2an feed was getting shorter and shorter, first she only took a little of the second side, then refused the second side, then only sucked for a minute on the first side and went back to sleep. The next night when she woke at about that time I gave her a little pat and she went back to sleep. From then on she slept from midnight till 4. But it was guided by her. Also she woke up more during growth spurts, illness, teething lol.

He's been in this night feed pattern since his evening routine started so just over 2 weeks. He wouldn't be in a growth spurt that long would he ?

FWIW, when I tried a dream feed DS just added an extra feed in there, so by dream feeding you might be interrupting the long stretch of sleep?

I know that having a long stretch starting at 7.30 isn't that convenient, but its better than no long stretch at all.  Without the dreamfeed I could always grab an early night when I needed to sleep and they'd sleep from 7.30 to 1.30

Your bubs sounds pretty normal though.

Try NOT doing the dream feed.  It never worked for me and just created an extra feed that I eventually had to wean and also I wasnt getting to bed early enough.

For me the things I made sure of:

Make sure baby is well fed and completely full when you settle at night
Make sure baby is tightly wrapped (if you still wrap) so they cant escape. My bubs woke the minute their arms escaped.
Make sure baby is nice and warm.

Once you have ticked the above boxes I think you just have to roll with it when they are little especially if the feeds are full feeds and baby seems hungry when she wakes.  Try and get an early night yourself.

I also found the dream feed just added an extra feed in the long run with DS.

With DD (5 months) I have approached it differently, and just left her alone, and not messed around with her feeds. She also has the longest stretch in the early part of the evening, but over time, it has gotten longer and longer. She goes down at about 8pm, and will often sleep to 3 or 4am, feed then, and then again at about 6.30-7am. Sometimes she wakes at 1 am as well, and I just feed her then, as I figure she may just be extra hungry that day. She has slept all the way through to about 5.30 a few times lately, which was nice!

The main thing I have found that makes a difference, is ensuring she has plenty of good feeds through the day. If we are out and about a lot, she doesn't feed as well, and those are the nights that she will wake two or three times to feed.

Ehill have tried not dream feeding he wakes about midnight
I've just moved him into wrap me up swaddle, works a treat. I fill him right up at that 630/7pm feed sometimes even comping if he'll take it. So I think I've ticked everything off

Very happy to have my early evenings so I consider that a win ! Guess I should just get myself to bed earlier and see how we go

Sounds like you are doing a great job and all very normal!  If he is going from 7pm till midnight then that is actually 5hrs without a feed so that is pretty good.  It will hopefully stretch out a bit as he gets older.  Get yourself to bed by 8pm and then you should manage a 4hr stretch yourself which is good.  It isnt forever.  Take care.

I agree with this and her previous post. Bed time for me is pretty much 8:30 every night. Exciting life that it is...

I hate to say it but you might even find it gets worse before it gets better. DS was doing 6-8 hour stretches for the first few months and then hit the 4 month sleep regression in conjunction with two extended wonder week periods. We have since had two months of waking every 2-3 hours overnight every night (he is exclusively BF). My first baby did likewise. It is very common for sleep to regress and many of the women in my DIG are experiencing the same. It's a bloody killer but it does pass eventually. Can't hurt to try everything that has been suggested though. Good luck, and hope you get some sleep original.gif

Thanks guys appreciate the support.  biggrin.gif I feel like getting into something of a evening routine by 3 months was an achievement so we'll take it one step at a time.
