my DD Tahlia has come up with leaps and bounds this year. She was so shy at kinder (All day daycare with kinder based program), she wasn't confident and would not do anything for herself and relied on her brother who is 18months older and very outgoing.
I was almost going to keep her back this year, but academically she was ready for school (and honestly would be bored at home), but it was the social side. She played next to kids but didn't really have friends with the kinder kids, she rarely spoke out of her comfort zone... ie if we saw friends at school or shops (so people she knew). But the main concern is if she felt pressured she would just shut down.
There was on incident at school where the teacher said "Tahlia what would you like to do".. and the was the first two mistakes 1.Asking her what she wanted.. giving her a choice and 2. Asking her infront of her peers. She burst into tears and l fellt bad (as well as teacher) but we worked thru it and she overcame it.
So she has gone from this shy, quiet, not confident little girl, to happy, cheeky and full of confidence.
I think the way the school runs is helping her come out of her shell, and she enjoys sharing in class, getting out the front, being the speical person. Another thing that has helped is she has started to do a music program run during school, basically an introduction to music, so she did a bit of drums, guitar, singing, keyboard and song writing and has found her passion is music and loves to sing.. so next year we are focussing on singing and wirting songs (and she is only 6). Music has been a great therapy for her.
She even got out the front in front of the school (400 people) with her group (4 girls) and sang.... Funny tho as l was talking to the music teacher an d he said "put her in front of a keyboard and she will hide behind it, give her a microphone and she is in her element". Usually its the other way around.
But she is excellent at reading (reading at a grade 2 level), maths, her writing is excellent and loves to write stories, and she loves to RUN. And is very good at it, came first out of the prep girls on sports day. She has found another passion.
I am just so proud of her that she has found herself, adn is really confident and just loving school and she is friends with every child in her class, so much so that she has been to mostly every birthday this year ($$ for me
) and had every child to her birthday party.
