Allergy Friendly Yogurt Starter?

I have recently become the proud owner of an easiyo to make my own yogurt as my little one is dairy and soy intolerant.
I have found a good coconut milk recipe but am unsure of what to use as the starter.
The recipe is basically;
3-4 cups coconut milk (easy)
1-2 tsp of gelatin or 3 table spoons of tapioca flour
Can I use keffir? Can anyone suggest anything else?

It depends on how serious your LO's allergy is. Although most starters are grown in either a dairy or soy medium, the medium is almost completely removed from the culture before you get it and as a result there are only trace amounts of e medium left over. Fr most people this will be ok, but form people with a serious allergy this might be problematic.
The other alternatives you have are to use probiotic capsules (look for dairy and soy free ones), or else you might also be able to use a portion of a purchased coconut yoghurt (something like coyo) for a starter.
ETA - you could try water kefir granules but it will make a very thin yoghurt like drink, rather than a thicker yoghurt.

The probiotic capsules I use as a starter are dairy free. They are blackmores brand, $30 for 90.

Schnitzelvonkrumb she has intolerances not allergies as such so perhaps the starters might be okay?
MISS_E I might try the probiotic capsules first and see what success we have there
Thanks again ladies

A tip when using probiotic capsules as starter it seems they are much more intolerant of slightly too much heat, probably because they are small granules and directly exposed to the milk. I am not sure how an easiyo works as I just make mine in a jar, but make sure you don't add the probiotics to milk that is too hot, 37c is optimal and they start dying at anything above that.
