Sugar free beverage suggestions

So I'm trying to give up sugar, and I'd like some ideas on some beverage options.

Tea has lost it's joy for me now without the sugar! Hope that changes as I get used to it, but I do get bored of it now since I find it tasteless, so I need something to alternate it with when I'm bored at work. Coffee I can't handle at all without the sugar.

Don't want to go to artificially sweetened drinks instead.

Don't like flavoured teas... they all smell like whatever they are supposed to be, but taste like dishwater to me.

Am I just being a fussy mcfussy and I'm going to have to get used to drinking stuff I don't particularly like, or are there some other sugar free beverages out there? Is cocoa totally disgusting without sugar? Is there anything else I could mix with milk to liven it up?

Water with lemon juice sqeeaed in it makes a change from plain water.  It's also good to have something a bit acidic after you eat as it reduces the amount of fat you absorb from your meal, or something like that.

Sparkling water, add in a squeeze of fresh lemon juice if you need flavour. It's about routine - I now get disappointed when we run out and I can't take a bottle to work.

Lemon, good idea! And actually lemon teas too are one of the few that actually taste of the flavour.
And sparkling water - how the heck did I forget about that? Brilliant - thanks!

Water.

Not trying to be a smart alec OP but you may find you have a bit of sugar "withdrawal" for lack of a better word and its important to stay hydrated. Get in the mind frame of drinking water medicinally and it will obviously reduce your thirst and you can then tacke the sugar cravings head on.  

Why are you giving up sugar? If you just want to reduce refined/added sugar but are okay with natural sugars then fresh fruit and veggie juices might be an option. My favourite combo of apple, orange, carrot and beetroot is a fantastic sugar hit for the mid afternoon slump.

Do you have to go cold turkey? I managed to go from 2 sugars in tea/coffee to 0 slowly over about 6 months. It took a while to kick the last 1/2 teaspoon but its totally doable.

What about using nativa, a natural sugar substitute.  I actually found it allowed me to wean from the taste of sugar.  I do love their hot dark chocolate powder. http://www.natvia.com.au/

Lemon or limes.  Iced tea.  I drink cocoa and milo with hot water, no milk - I love it.

Milo is about 50% sugar! Will try iced tea - I never actually have.

Hoppingllama - dunno why, but I just can't stand the taste - a friend lent me some. I've always been quite sensitive to the taste of artificial sweeteners, and stevia based ones are no different sad.gif

semf - no I'm trying to do the no fructose thing, so steering away from juices as well. I might start on green smoothies or something that keeps all the fibres, once I've tamed my sweet tooth, but I don't want to make it a staple as I've been reading sweet poison and want to trying being fructose free.
But yep, will possibly end up weaning slowly if I can't find any satisfactory substitutes. I've gotten my coffee down to 1 from 3, and tea about half from one... but I'm hitting the wall!

If you like a chocolate taste try plain carob powder. It is quite sweet on its own without sugar. Or try tea made with milk. Boil the tea bag with the milk, and add some cardamon and cinnamon. Or you can google chai masala and see what other spices you could add to milk based tea.

There is also a nice Indonesian way of serving hot milk which is a spicy ginger drink. It has powdered ginger and a pinch of pepper boiled in milk. Depending what shops you have near you, you may be able to buy ready mixed sachets to add to hot milk. Just check they don;t have sugar in them (some ready mix sachets do).

We have a soda stream machine that is used exclusively for fizzing water.  We're not big on sugary drinks, but sometimes you just want something different from plain old tap water.

Ahhh - interesting read isn't it.

Apparently a small percentage of the population are a little bit sensitive to phenylalanine which is a major component of aspartame (artificial sweetener) and consequently it tastes foul (me included - can't stand diet drinks, chewing gum etc).

I haven't tried it but I've heard that the fructose fee chocolate melted into milk makes an okay hot chocolate if you're desperate:

I agree with the sparkling water with citrus fruit in it and also iced tea.
I like herb teas done as iced tea. Jst steep them and pop them in the fridge- a way to sweeten them up naturally is to add a tiny amount of dried hibiscus flowers (any good tea shop will sell these).
Almond milk is awesome too when you make it yourself and yo can use the pulp to bake with.
Also make water interesting. I was at a spa in the USA (free treatment as part of hotel deal) and they had cooled water with cucumbers chopped up in it. It was soooo yummy. I make water different at home with some mint in it, or some limes/lemons/oranges/watermelon in it. It just gives the illusion of something a bit more special. But cucumber was great.

I agree with PP's suggestions of just adding something lovely to iced water or iced soda water. I regularly add slices of lemon, orange, lime, ginger, cucumber, kiwi, strawberry, watermelon, etc. Fresh herbs like mint (there are so many mints like apple mint or ginger mint or peppermint, etc which make it even more different) or lemon balm, lemongrass or borage are also lovely as sprigs in water.

You might be giving up on tea too soon.

Try letting your tea steep for a little longer if you are not already. It makes a big difference to the taste. And if you're using bags switch to leaves.

Also do you drink Earl Grey? The bergamot in it is so fragrant I'd be suprised if you want sugar in it. I like a blend of Earl Grey with some black tea leaves mixed into it.

What tea are you drinking? I find the standard ones like Lipton etc are pretty tasteless without sugar. Try something a bit stronger - I like Tetley British blend, Twinnings Irish breakfast or Yorkshire gold.

I was going to suggest cucumber and mint in ice cold water.  We always have a big jug on the table at Christmas for between 'bad' drinks.  And ginger and mint is lovely too.

For hot drinks, I love ginger and lemon.

I'm really enjoying reading this thread.  I am horribly addicted to sugar, and know I need to cut it out.  But finding it hard to take the leap.  This is giving me ideas and motivation  original.gif

I am someone who at various points has had no sugar in hot drinks up to 2 teaspoons of sugar.

With tea just persist in drinking it without sugar your tastebuds will adapt quickly.

Tea without sugar can be tasty (that's how I have it)... as PP says persevere! I am partial to a little honey in my peppermint tea though.

Also, we sell Iced Teas (fairtrade and organic) - there is a little sugar, but I would think much less than Nestea or Lipton Iced Tea. Let me know if you want to try some. Alternatively you can make your own as PP suggested. I googled homemade iced tea and have tried once so far. Needs some tweeking.

Chia fresca is nice for something different. There are heaps of variations out there including watermelon/lime, plain lemon etc etc.

Hot tea with fresh mint and no milk is lovely. However, I need to make the tea much weaker than I would if I was having milk. So I just dunk the bag in a couple of times.

Green tea with jasmine is great too, but only leaf stuff - green tea bags are invariably awful!

.I find honeyless chai nice too, but it needs to be made ahead because I only like proper milk-based chai. Either make up your own spice mix or get a box from an Indian shop, and simmer it slowly in a big pot of milk. Then chill the milk in the fridge to drink over a few days.

Trying to get back on the sugarless wagon myself - this is NOT the right time of year to do it!

virgin mojitos are nice, soda/mineral water, lime juice and mint. Otherwise I just add lemon to mineral/soda water.

just drink lots of water and make sure you start the day with a protein packed breakfast. That will certainly help kickstart what looks like an enormous sugar addiction. good luck

Sweet Poison is a terrible book. I don't know why people take it as gospel. Most of the studies cited were conducted only on animals. It also states white rice is good for you  huh.gif He pieced together information to support his theory.

Cutting out refined sugar is a great start. Substituting with other natural sources is great. Try honey and stevia. Most stevia products can have a bad aftertaste though. Xylitol is a good alternative too. It doesn't affect insulin levels.

For a healthy lifestyle which includes weightloss follow simple clean eating and exercise. There's plenty of clean eating and paleo recipes online for inspiration. HIIT training is great for blasting fat fast.

80% of weightloss is diet, 20% is exercise.
