I'd like to make a trifle to take to Christmas lunch. I know they are simple, and although I've never made one before I feel pretty confident I could throw something together. But, I'd love to see any favourite trifle recipes for inspiration. I'm after a pretty traditional one, happy with booze or no booze.

Not so traditional, but I love the Nigella Lawson Anglo Italian Trifle. Can't post a link from iPhone but you can google. I just use frozen berries and it is quite easy to make but have had lots of compliments.

That looks yummy, thanks, but probably not preggo safe. I should have mentioned that part! I don't mind a sprinkling of sherry or brandy, but this one has raw eggs

I don't know how traditional it is but it is a favourite at our place.
Place sponge cake in the bottom of a big bowl. Pour over liquid jelly so it soaks into the cake. Put in fridge to set for a bit. Pour over a can of fruit (usually fruit salad, no juice) on top of the cake/jelly mix. Pour over custard and top with whipped cream. You can also decorate with grated chocolate if you like, but we usually don't.

Haha, yeah, probably not so good. I do think it would work without the eggs if necessary, but not sure about the mascarpone.
Have never made a traditional one so am interested in other responses.

I adore trifle but prefer it old-school and retro tacky style: slices of supermarket jam scroll laid on the bottom of a big bowl, sprinkled with a cup of sweet sherry, pour green or red cubes of jelly over the base, pour over shop bought custard and then top with sweetened whipped cream and slices of strawberries and tinned peaches. Ahhh, just like my Grandma used to make when I was a kid at Christmas time. Love it

I had a look online and it seems half the recipes use cubes of jelly, half pour the jelly onto the cake...
Pros and cons for each method?

I make mine with those dry Italian sponge finger biscuits (Savoiardi), jelly, canned fruit and its juice poured over and also fresh fruit. Mango, strawberries, blueberries, etc. I don't have a recipe, just keep going until the bowl is full!

Well I am making Jamie Oliver's Mum's Christmas trifle. Going to take me a couple of days, but looks droolingly good.
