Should a voucher be for two people?

MIL has a big birthday coming up just after Christmas.  For FIL's equivalent birthday a couple of years ago, DH and FIL went rally driving.  The cost of FIL's part came out of our joint money for presents and the cost of DH's part came out of his personal spending money.  This allowed us to 'afford' a more extravagant present for FIL.

I would like to get MIL a voucher for a spa day.  However, I've had a spa day on my own before and for me it was no fun - I think you really need someone else to go with you.  Question is - should we fork our for a spa day for two people so she can take who she wants at no cost or should the person she asks to go with her fork out for their own costs?

I'm really torn, if we buy for two then what we will be able to get her will be much less, but it's a bit much to ask someone else to pay to go with her.  I think it would be most likely she would ask one of her sisters, it definitely won't be me.

WDYT?

If you give her a voucher for two people is she going to assume that it's for the two of you, leading to an awkward moment? I would get the fancy voucher just for her and if she wants to take someone they can either pay for themselves, or they can work something out, like going halves.  I don't think it's your responsibility to cover her 'plus one'.  Unless you can just get a cash amount rather than a package, and then she can choose how to spend it?  Sounds like a lovely gift, regardless of what you choose.

I'd hate to go to a day spa with someone else (unless they were treating me  wink.gif ).  But then I hate when you're having a massage and the masseur is gabbing on the whole time.   Sssssshhhhhh!

If someone gave me two vouchers for a day spa, I'd go twice by myself!

I'd prefer a day spa on my own. Ahhh the peace and quiet.

I'd just pay for one voucher and if she wants someone else to come, she can just invite someone willing to pay for themselves.

Day spa voucher is for one.

I went with a GF once and DH one and seriously not as fun as quiet time alone.

Anyone following me into a spa - my idea of hell.

I also hate when a friend comes along to a yoga class.

Another vote for spa day for one. If someone else wants to go, they could pay for themselves.

We usually give movie tickets, concert tickets etc in pairs, but I think a day spa voucher is fine to give alone. original.gif

Definitely spa voucher for one. I thought you were going to be talking concert tickets, movie tickets, theatre tickets etc, when of course you need two.

DH and I had a couples package for a day spa which was nice, but other than that, me, myself and I is all the company I would need.

I came in here from reading the title to say 'yes, it needs to be for 2, unless it's a massage or day spa then should only be for one'.

So there you go!

For a Day Spa - just one. I love going to a day spa on my own. The idea of someone else there with me is just awkward - I want to lie back and relax and chit chat!

Definately for 1 - I couldn't think of anything worse than trying to relax and having another person there.

I'd feel obligated to talk etc when all I want to do is go silent / tune out and relax.

I would get the voucher just for one person. Personally, it would ruin my spa experience if I had someone there with me.

Why would it cause an awkward moment?  Doesn't she know her MIL well enough to just say 'you can take whoever you want'?  A day spa I'd be OK with giving just the one voucher, if it were concert tickets or something like that I'd get them two (which I have done for people in the past as some people won't go on their own and if they can't find someone who'll pay for their own and go with them there's a chance the ticket could be wasted).

Can't you make the voucher for a set amount and its up to her if she goes all out for herself, or takes a payi g friend along. Or she chooses a smaller package x 2

I have been to a spa - by myself.  It is about deep relaxation not gabbing with whoever is with you the whole time which has the effect of breaking the spell.
