I was photographing at some salt lakes on Sunday when I spotted a spider on a tree stump. Had the macro lens so took a few shots (had to get quite close, thank goodness it didnt move). When I uploaded I realised the "knobbly back" was actually its babies!!! Urggghhhhh. Its a wolf spider, and they adapt their appearance to the environment, hence it is white because of the salt....

I generally don't have an issue with spiders, but that makes me wants to vomit. So many eyes and spider babies :vom:

Stunning photo though original.gif

Great capture! I remember once finding a spider & thought the same.. that it was a "knobbly back".. & on closer inspection it was babies - eeek!

Another time I stood on my bath mat, not realising a mum with babes on board were underneath.. until they scurried & sprawled out all over the floor!!

Fantastic capture! I used to be terrified of spiders until I started to fall in love with macro photography.

Can I just ask.. Which macro lens do you use and was this with natural lighting?

It's just amazing and I hope to capture images even half as good some day!

Teressa - using the Canon 100mm macro f2.8L. This was handheld, natural light 1/60 (the IS is great!) f11 ISO 800. Love this lens original.gif

Great detail - there is a photographer I follow on Project 365 who used to take photos almost exclusively of spiders and specifically jumping spiders who look a lot like this - so I am sort of immune to the whole spider thing biggrin.gif

My Dh  squashed one of these in our house and didnt realise it's back was all baby spiders. Oh my they spread everywhere it was disgusting .
Great capture, did you use a flash?

I like the jumping spiders, but they are tiny, this was much bigger! I have a new found respect for insects since taking up macro, so try not to kill unless I have have to.

I didnt use a flash as didnt take one with me (was mainly shooting landscapes).

THAT is disgusting Shirl!

Although such a brilliant capture! The 100mm f/2.8 is amazing. I don't have the L but it is hands down my favourite lens. Although for that, I'd have wanted the 180mm!! Do they make 500mm macro lenses? laughing2.gif
