I was thinking about trying for our 2nd…. Then I was made redundant

Hi All

I need some advice. My DH and I were thinking about trying for our 2nd in the new year... then I was made redundant.

I was on maternity leave and was due to go back to work in early Nov last year, then in late Oct I was made redundant. They tried to redeploy me but there were no positions suitable for me so I took the redundancy and started desperately applying for jobs. We have reviewed our situation and we both need to work.

Now I am faced with a dilemma - When I do finally get a job (which I am hoping will be soon!) how long do I wait before I start TTC?

The last thing I want is to start a new job and then fall pregnant too soon. But we really wanted to have children close together, my DD is now 12 months and we were thinking about trying from March.

What would you do?

I started a new job in the April and fell pregnant in the October....

Basically if you have been there 12 months, you are entitled to 12 months unpaid leave. If you find somewhere that pays you leave, then that is a bonus. You should still get the PPL.

So, I personally, would wait until I had been there for a good three or four months before trying. You want to know you have a job to come back to.

I am pretty sure that you cannot take protected mat leave until you have been in a position for 12 months.

Life throws curveballs. But if you need to work, and not workin is not an option, then you need to prioritise your work over the spacing of your children. It's not as if you are choosing to not have another child at all.

So I personally would delay even TTC until six months after you get a new job (to allow for early arrivals, late pregnancy complications etc).

To be eligible for maternity leave, you need to be at your current workplace for 12 months when the leave starts.  That means not trying until after you have been there at least 3 months.  If getting pregnant means you would need to be redeployed (such as a job with chemical exposure or hard labour), it would be polite to wait at least 6 months.

I didn't let starting anew job stop us ttc because with a history of miscarriage, I didn't know how long it'd take. As it turns out, I started at work on January 15 and my LMP was January 30. original.gif My workplace offered me unpaid mat leave even though they didn't have to.

As per the PPs have said. As an extra, if you fell earlier, you need to be employed for 10 consecutive months (but it only has to be for at least 1 hour a week) to get the PPL from the government. So a company doesn't have to keep your job for you, but they do have an obligation to pay PPL if that makes sense. Actually, I think if you have been employed for less than the maternity leave 12 month quota and the company decide to let you go, centrelink are still obligated to pay you the PPL directly, and not through an employer. Someone please correct me if I am incorrect.
