Hi everyone, I've been a lurker rather than an active poster on this site for a long time, so forgive me if I'm not putting this in the right place.

I've been trying to contact the Victorian Maternal and Child Health hotline (the 13 22 29 number) as my almost 1 year old is vomiting and I wanted to get some advice. I've called it before, 5ish months ago most recent, and it's been a wonderful service.

However, now when I call it, it just gives me a user-busy signal. I've tried a few times now.

Does anybody know if there's any problems with it, or even if it's been subject to budget cuts (hope not, it's an invaluable service), or is it just me having issues?

Thanks
Kate

Anytime I have called it we have ended up in a queue. I've had more luck with calling the general Nurse On Call number, they answer a lot faster

Sometimes I've had the same trouble. It usually comes good eventually.

However, in your case, I would suggest you try Nurse on Call or similar - I've done that when I fell down the stairs with DS and didn't get through on the MCHN line immediately.

I just tried to call and was 6th in the queue which usually means a long wait.

As per PP try Nurse on call 1300 60 60 24 if you don't get through quickly. Maybe use your landline for one and mobile for the other and hang up whichever takes longer. Best of luck, and put the phone on speaker so you can get things done while you wait.

Thanks very much everybody! Sounds like it's just an issue from my end - I wasn't even getting the queue, just an engaged signal. At least I know the service is still up and running.

I will try the nurse on call - thanks for the advice! Poor sick bubba... :-(

How dogs could make children better readers

Issues around children learning to read are rarely out of the news. Which is hardly surprising – becoming a successful reader is of paramount importance in improving a child's life chances. Nor is it surprising that reading creates a virtuous circle: the more you read the better you become. But what may come as a surprise is that reading to dogs is gaining popularity as a way of addressing concerns about children's reading.
