I enjoy election campaigns too, but it is odd announcing it so far in advance. I am afraid of 8 months of campaigning and no governing. I know it had to occur sometime this year but announcing the date makes the campaigning official.

I know Bob!

I am wondering if it is a strategy to make sure she holds onto the leadership as surely no one in the ALP (including KRudd) would want to challenge her during an election campaign.  Plus TA might have to release some policies now…

I do to, but I'm not a fan of this idea of a 9 month election campaign.. I like the idea of the short, surprise it's an election, 5 week campaigns.

Going to a 9 month campaign, not sure that's the best move...

That's what I think - Gillard says it's so that they can get it (the announcement) out of the way and get on with the job, business as usual.
Yeah right

Oh my goodness...... I don't care if she specifically said it is not to be the longest election campaign in history..

It's going to be the longest election campaign in history!

Blergh!

I live in a marginal electorate and have a surname that is right up there at the beginning of the alphabet- this now means I'll be getting phone calls on my voting preferences for 8 bloody months!

I am wondering if it is something along these lines- maybe something is about to come up (again) that will threaten the minority government and this is a way to hold on to power as there is an upcoming election anyway.

Nothing gets them off the phone like a correctly drawled 'I don't rightly know, ma'am, but God bless  aw-stril-ya.'

Im a political dunce, but is there any chance this could force someone (anyone...) to challenge TA for the Lib leadership?

Darling... stick in your safe seat!
While it is quite exciting on election night having half the country waiting with bated breath to see how you and your neighbours voted - marginal isn't fun.
And they haven't rolled out any pork barrels that apply to me in decades!

For the election groupies... Antony Green and ukelele!

This is what she posted on Facebook:
QUOTE
‎"Today I announce that the 2013 federal election will be held on Saturday the 14th of September.

Announcing the election date now enables individuals and business, investors and consumers, to plan their year.

There is now the time and certainty necessary for the people and parties contesting the election to lay out their fully detailed, costed plans for the timely consideration of voters.

There’s plenty for this Government to be getting on with – plenty of work to do for our nation.

I will devote the days of governing to that work and then, on the 14th of September, ask the Australian people to endorse my plan to keep building a strong, fair, smart nation."
