I have been buying the Desert Red sand for my Blue tongue for the two years I have had him, but the local pet store has stopped selling it. I could go to another and look, but notice they had a bark type substance that I could use instead. Someone also told me they use cat litter pellets, but I want something a bit 'prettier.'

What substrate do you use?

I used to use sand also. Doesn't just have to be the red desert sand, there is also a white version which is good.
Otherwise the bark substrate looks nice and natural, but isn't as practical to clean up messes.
That is where the Ozpet or breeders choice cat litters are good, they are easy to clean, and cheap, but don't look as nice as the sand/bark.

I used to use astro turf for our lizards, there is no risk of accidental ingestion, easy to clean and you don't have to replace it every week. And the rough bits help when it comes time to shed.
