Hair washing day was very traumatic in this house until I received some excellent advice from a hairdresser.
She firstly told me to stop using my fancy conditioner in DD's hair because the protein in it was actually toughening her hair and making it knot more. She recommended Redken's clear moisture range, which has been excellent.
And then she sold me a magic brush to use in the shower. I know, I know, never brush wet hair, especially if it's curly. But this brush is something special. The brand is DuBoa. It has changed my life. I can now brush the conditioner through DD's hair in about 90 seconds. No screaming from either of us.
I also spray her hair with leave in conditioner (same Redken range) before doing her hair for school and then use the brush. It's been amazing. I can even braid her hair now.
I reckon there are other brands of shampoo and conditioner out there that would do the same job, but the DuBoa has been a life changer for us.
ETA: DD's hair is in much better condition now, much smoother and shinier. Zero damage.
