According to the Sydney Observatory website, tonight is supposed to be special because Jupiter and it's own moons will appear very close to our Moon, just off to the side of it. I still have the telescope out from trying to spot DA 14 the other night (didn't) but ... there's no moon out? I saw the moon overhead at about 4:30pm this afternoon. So why would they be saying that the best time to view the Moon and Jupiter would be between 11:30 and 12 tonight in the northern sky? I can't see the Moon at all...I'm facing east though. We have a fairly good view towards the north and south. Our apartment blocks out the western horizon though. Can anyone with a view to the West see it out tonight?

There is a nice free app called Google Sky which helps find celestial bodies. It shows a map of whatever is in the direction that you point your phone.

I heard it is a moon/jupiter eclipse, nothing about seeing jupiters moons.

DS was asking what the start next to the moon was earlier & I had no idea - not to mention confusion over the abnormal orangy colour of the moon tonight

that's so cool. It's like there's no moon, and look in the corner and it's like ahhh there it is. Instead of where's wally, it's like where's the moon?  biggrin.gif I'm going to have to show my 11 year old it when he gets home from school.

well, didn't get to see it last night but think it was probably in the west if it was overhead at 4:30. Oh well, each year in February Jupiter cruises on by just to the north of our apartment and though they aren't visible to the naked eye, we can usually see around nine of Jupiter's moons with our telescope. Viewers in Perth, Adelaide etc got to see our Moon pass in front of Jupiter and it's moons.

We're in Perth and we saw it at about 7.30pm

Thanks for the photo link - both of my boys want to talk about it for news this week!
