I'm upgrading my iPhone and am thinking of giving my old one to my niece. Does anyone know if it'll work for her? She's in NZ and I think at the moment has a pre-paid phone. I don't want to get her hopes up if it turns out she's unable to use it!

Do you know if the phone is locked? If so you will have to unlock it first and restore all the settings (speak to your carrier and they can talk you through it). If you have kept the phone up to date this should be easy.

Other than that I can't see why it won't work with an NZ sim card.

If unlocked it should work.

It will also work like am iPod touch if it has no SIM. My kids have an iPhone 3 as an iPod touch from their Aunt.
