Hi TimTam 7, my check was just a quick scan in Ob office- he doesn't appear that worried, didn't arrange further testing/scans. He did comment that I only just scrap into GD when I tested with the "new" levels, under the old levels I wouldn't of been considered to have GD. Baby is big all over so not just tummy, legs are long wink.gif . Since cutting out bread, pasta and cutting down on rice I have dropped 6kgs -I have taken it back to meat & 3 veg type main meals but I found I needed to eat smaller more often (every 3hrs) to keep levels fairly even -my snack between meals is normally an apple or some strawberries with a dash of balsamic. (fasting is normally around 4.5 and after meals is normally around 5.6 (only hit 6.1 after baby shower and eating cupcakes etc)

My first was over 4kg (9.6oz) and very long (has been off the charts height wise since born and still tracking that way at 5yrs of age), everyone both sides of the family is around the 6ft mark (except me), my daughter was the smallest of her generation (4 cousins so far) and according to my pregnancy records  from her I always measured a few weeks ahead.

I am already booked for a C-section 5days before due date (I have pelvis issues that wont allow baby to engage fully or be birthed naturally) so unless something pops up in the next few weeks I don't think he will change that date.

Hi just wondering if I can pop in here. Currently 8 wks preg with #4. I was diagnosed with gd at 4wks after a fasting blood test. My level then was only 5.2 which is .1.over the cutoff. I laughed it off really but now some mornings im getting levels as high as 5.9. Today its 5.9 again :/

My after meals level is fine usually under 6.0 but sometimes under 7.0. My cutoff for that is 7.4 and ive only ever been over once after a big meal at the ILs.

Hi Wally_23 - your GD sounds a lot like mine! My fasting levels are consistently high, which for my case means insulin and medication is required. There's not much diet and exercise can do for high fasting levels. I have very few problems after meals unless I've eaten a really big meal with lots of carbs. I've only been over my target at meals about 3 times since I started monitoring 5 weeks ago. My target is 6.7 though.

I'm 26 weeks now, and was diagnosed at 21 weeks because bubs is really big for his gestational age.

You'll probably be referred on to an endocrinologist soon to look at options. At least it's so early that you'll hopefully be able to get good control of your blood glucose soon and have less chance of a big baby. And don't be scared of the insulin injections if you need them - I find it heaps easier than the finger pricks - the needles are tiny, and it's all in a little device where you just screw on the needle, dial up the dose and inject. I can barely feel the needles at all.

You may also find that you were insulin resistant before pregnancy. My endocrinologist suspects that was the case with me, because GD doesn't normally kick in that early unless you've got underlying issues. So she's warned me that it may not completely go away after pregnancy, but I probably wouldn't need insulin at that point, it would be a lifestyle management program.

Anyway, I hope I haven't overwhelmed you! I took the diagnosis pretty hard, but it really hasn't been that hard to manage so far, just a bit annoying at times. *Hugs*

I was 5.2 at my fasting levels test (needs to be 5.0 & under).

I have been monitoring my levels for the past week. Fasting I have been between 3.8 & 4.4 (needs to be under 5.2) & 1 hr after eating between 4.4 - 6.3 (needs to be under 7.4). I have not been sticking to any of there diet recommendations & eating what I like, have not changed my eating habits at all.

My GP seems to think I just had a bad night before I took my initial fasting test as things can increase your blood sugar level (like fasting too long, stress & lack of sleep).He does not believe I have GD at all, but because they lowered the levels 12 months ago a lot of women who normally would not have it have been getting diagnosed with it if they are just above the cut off.

Sorry I am not much help as I have not really had to go down this avenue for to long.
In regards to fasting levels I have been told before you go to bed to have something like a hot chocolate / milo  some people have found this has helped with their levels in the morning.

Miss_KT sounds like you did just get unlucky with the fasting level. The cut offs are so stringent and given your levels I would tend to agree with your GP.

My glucose levels go up overnight (I've done a couple of nights where I checked before bed and again at 3am when I normally wake up to pee) - but endocrinologist has said I should not have a snack after dinner, or make it something low carb if I really need something. If I don't snack I wake up hungry during the night and I can't usually eat enough at dinner to tide me over because bubs is taking up all my belly room!

I wish to join this thread as I had GD in first pregnancy and was diagnosed at 22 weeks. I am now 4 wks preg as of Saturday just gone and thought I had better do a sugar reading this morning out of curiosity. My wake up reading was 5.8!!
I was not expecting anything yet.

I ended up on insulin last time, but was grateful for it as my carb count per day was getting down to 60gms. so once back on insulin, once a day, I was eating pretty normally with 120gm carb count a day until the last few days before birth.

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has experienced similar. My fasting glucose levels are always fine, but I've been getting the odd spike now and then 2 hours after meals. My OB is sending me to the endocrinologist next week as he's not happy with the spikes.

The thing I'm worried about is that often my blood sugar drops too LOW. I eat regularly, but it still happens. Today I ate a banana at 3.00. By 6.00 my level was 3.2. I'm worried the endo will want me on insulin, and I'm concerned that it will cause even more hypo issues or even coma.

From what I've read, low blood sugar in GD is either caused by too much insulin (which I'm not currently taking) or not eating enough (seriously, I eat every 2-3 hours). Has anyone gone through anything similar? What was the outcome?

I've never had lows when not on insulin so no idea sorry.

I'm back here again after having GD with my last pregnancy also (I was on a lot of insulin, was induced at 39w).  I have the Diabetes Educator appointment this morning, bet that will be thrilling...  I got sick of lectures etc last time, I can see myself being a dreadful patient to deal with this time (not helped by them only having the endocrinologists available Thursday mornings and I can't do Thursday mornings for the next 5 weeks, I'm preparing myself for the lecture already...)

Really hoping someone might be able to help me out.

I'm 30 week and was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with GD - my level have been ok (average 5.8) but today I've been measuring in the 7s and 8s while on exactly the same diet. The weird thing is, if I test a few times in a row (using the same pin prick spot) my level consistently drop - at 3pm they started at 7.9 and by my 5th test strip they were 5.7. Is this discrepancy normal? Minot sure if I'm getting different readings because my blood is 'different' in nature as it flows, or if I have a faulty monitor.

Any ideas or experiences much appreciated as I'm so so stressed out about it all.

Hi ladies,

First time mum here and I've been diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks.  My GTT results were 4.3 (fasting), 7.7 (after one hour) and 8.0 (after two hours).  Everything I've been googling has examples of the reading going down after two hours, i.e. there is a spike at one hour and a decrease at two hours.  Did anyone else have their reading go up on the two hour mark?  Is this a bad sign?  My appointment with the diabetes specialist is a week away and I'm just interested really to find out how 'bad' my readings are or aren't.  

Any advice would be appreciated.

I've never been tested at 1 hour with the 2 hour test, just fasting and 2 hour.  I think my levels were 5.2 fasting and 8.6 at 2 hours this time (I was tested early because I had GD last time).

My fasting levels now vary significantly but are mostly in the mid-6s and up to over 7.  Breakfast and lunch are fine, dinner swings roughly along with the fasting level, sometimes over, sometimes under but doesn't seem to follow what I have actually eaten much.  I'm supposed to be going on insulin but I can't do the limited endo times right now so regardless of how much they rant I have no choice but to wait.  I'm happy to use it so if they can get me the script no worries but man they make life difficult.  I'm only 21 1/2w so dreading having to deal with them for so long yet.

Hi ladies. I'm feeling like a biscuit at times, not a sweet one just something to crunch on with my cup of tea. Does anyone have any healthy recipe's or know what I can buy in the shops that is a healthy biscuit? Thank you.

Hi, I don't have GD this pregnancy but I did last. Ob rang me yesterday to tell me. I was so excited she has tested me 3 times this pregnancy.

Just wanted to say for the fasting levels. I always had a glass of hot milo  and a piece of fruit musli bar etc. at about 10pm before bed and my levels were always good in the morning. You don't think milo as something you can have. Hopefully it will help one of youtoo.

Hi, i just found out yesterday that i have GD, im 27.2 weeks pregnant and im already struggling with what i can eat, my doctor said just cut out sugar thats it, i see my midwife on wednesday but  I'm going away for 2 weeks after that so cant see the health clinic till i get back and ive no idea what im meant to be doing :S

Hi Rainbowbright05 - managing GD is more about carbs (bread, rice, pasta, fruit) than straight up sugar. There's lots of info online if you want to get started before the clinic, but the key thing is monitoring your blood glucose levels, which you won't be able to do until you've seen the clinic and have a monitor.

Here's some resources about eating well with GD so you can start looking at your diet:
The key thing is to spread your carbs out throughout the day (rather than having a lot of carbs in one go) - 3 smaller meals + 3 snacks helps to keep your levels even, and choose lower GI carbs. You'll need to learn what a serve of carb is and your clinic will give you targets. Everyone is different and once you've got a monitor you'll start to learn what affects you.

Also if you're not exercising much you'll need to start - the recommendation is generally about 30 minutes per day of moderate-intensity exercise such as walking. If you start getting into the habit now you will find it easier to manage your GD once you start monitoring your levels.

Hi, just wondering is someone can advise me....

I've just been diagnosed with GD at 30 weeks.  This is #3 pregnancy, and I haven't had it in previous pregnancies before, although first baby was large (over 4kg) and her glucose levels were a little low at birth.  My glucose levels were a little high during #2 but not enough to be too worried about apparently.  

Now, I've been told to watch my diet, (of course!) and to monitor my blood glucose levels.  I've only been doing that for a day and a half so far, and so far fasting levels (before breakfast) are high - 6.1 and 6.2, but levels throughout the day are fine > 7.  I know it's only early days yet, but is this an indication that I'm going to need insulin, or are levels around 6 not soooo bad???  

If anyone has any suggestions or like to share their story it would be much appreciated.

Hi wildweeny,

I've been managing my GD for just over a month now.  The targets the diabetes clinic have set for me are: fasting - under 5.2 and after breakfast, lunch, and dinner - under 7.2 (testing one hour after first mouthful).  If my clinic saw your numbers they would be happy with the daytime levels but would probably suggest the slow release insulin for night time to get the fasting levels down.  I've been taught how to use both types of insulin and was giving myself a very small amount of insulin before lunch and as my fasting levels range from 4.7 to 5.2 they have been happy with them so I haven't needed the slow release insulin overnight.  I'm no longer taking the insulin at lunchtime because for some reason my levels are stable and I'm always under 7.2 with 3 servings of carbs (which is what they recommend for lunch).  If you're worried about the insulin, don't be.  It's absolutely fine and hurts less than the finger prick testing.  

I have tried a few things to get my fasting levels down when they were up around 5.2 but something that would work for 3 days in a row would suddenly stop working and my level would go up to 5.2 again.  At the moment I'm having 2-3 shredded wheat biscuits right before bedtime and that seems to be keeping my levels at around 4.7-4.9 so I'll keep going with that.

If you are going to see a diabetes clinic or dietitian, they will tell you the recommended amount of carbs to eat throughout the day and it is important to eat the amounts they tell you as I was just trying to limit carbs and ended up losing weight and it wasn't very healthy at all.  One serving of carbs is 15g and this is what I have been told to eat throughout the day:  Breakfast 2 serves (1/2 cup of guardian cereal and a cup of milk).  Morning snack 2 serves (1 medium apple and 1 small banana).  Lunch 2-3 serves (sandwich with pretty much whatever you want on it and 100g of low fat yogurt).  Afternoon snack 1-2 serves (2 small mandarins).  Dinner 2-3 serves (2/3 cup of rice with stir fried veges and meat).  Supper 1-2 serves (3 shredded wheat biscuits).

I hope some of this helps.  It's not nice to be kept in the dark.

Thank you so much for your reply Dana.  Sounds like you're diet/levels are stricter than mine?  I've been told that fasting levels (before breakfast) should be below 5.5, and during the day between 4.5-7.5.  I haven't yet been given a specific diet - just told to stick to a low GI diet, which I have been doing (and as it turns out was mostly doing prior to diagnosis anyway). The nurse (specialising in diabetes) who I've dealt with once before rang me back yesterday which was comforting - to be able to discuss issues.  She says as my levels during the day are fine that it is very unlikely to be a diet issue, more hormonal.  She's suggested a few different options for supper and exercise activities after tea/dinner.  Was 6.0 this morning so it's the lowest it's been so hopefully I can at least keep it there if not lower.  The nurse also said it will depend on my obstetrician whether he believes I'll need insulin or not, so guess that decision will be made when I ring him with my test results later in the week.

I’ve found that they are all so different with the levels they want  in different clinics but I’ve seen it as a positive because I’ve been eating so much healthier since the diagnosis.  It could just be a matter of some exercise after dinner and the right kind of snack before bedtime to get your fasting levels down.  It’s a bit hit and miss but once you find what works it’s much less stressful.  Good luck with it all.

Wildweeny my case sounds a lot like yours - fine during the day (though I can't go bonkers with the carbs, and certain things like jasmine rice will push my levels up), but my fasting levels were consistently between 5.5 and 6.5 (average was 5.9) when I first started monitoring.

My targets are under 5 for fasting, and under 6.7 for 2 hours post meal (or under 7.4 if I need to test at the 1 hour mark).

They started me on a slow-release metformin tablet (diabex), which got all of my fasting readings under 6, but they wanted me under 5.0 so they started me on the slow release insulin. It worked, but the dosage has needed to be increased every week or so as the pregnancy progresses to keep my levels in the acceptable range. Luckily I've only got a couple of weeks to go now, because I'm getting close to the maximum dose.

My endocrinologist is a bit puzzled by the way my body is reacting, she expected that I would be on mealtime insulin weeks ago, but I haven't needed it. I do get the odd high reading, but it's always because I've been a bit slack with my diet or had a special occasion, and she's fine with one or two high readings each fortnight (but we're talking no higher than 7.4 2 hours after testing - my targets are very tight).

They are monitoring my levels very closely as bubs has been tracking in the 90-95th percentile on the growth charts since about 20 weeks, so if you're getting growth scans and they're not showing a large baby they may be a bit more relaxed. Apparently high fasting levels are one of the most dangerous though, as baby is getting too much glucose all the time, rather than getting less overnight, so it tends to push the growth up a lot.

I should also mention that I was diagnosed early (22 weeks) - my ob sent me for the test at 20 weeks because bub was quite big, so there's been a lot longer for my insulin levels to be increased, hence why I'm nearing the top dose.

Thanks so much for your reply TBen.  I wasn't aware there was a tablet you could take during pregnancy...  that's comforting!  Perhaps that will be all I need, fingers crossed?  Rang my obstet's office yesterday and gave my readings to reception.  Apparently he'll ring me back if he wishes for me to do anything else, otherwise keep on with what I've been doing until my next appt on the 21/10.  Thankfully he is fairly casual, but I don't doubt he knows what he's doing.  My fasting levels have had a couple of high jumps in the last few days - once was 6.8, another 6.7, then back to 6.2 and today was 6.3.  Mostly are around the 6.1/6.2 mark though.  Levels through the day are still perfect.  I splashed out and had an iced coffee yesterday, and it didn't seem to make one bit of difference.  My supper has been consistent the last 4 or 5 days (small glass of milk and slice of cheese - what the nurse suggested), yet levels still seem to be all over the place.  Very frustrating... :-/

Oh, and at last obstet appt (last Friday) bub was still measuring at around 30 weeks - so perhaps that's why obset is still relaxed...?

Ok girls, fasting levels are gradually creeping up.... :-(  Average mid 6's instead of low 6's as it was a week ago.  (Levels during the day still fine) Any suggestions on what I can do myself to get them back down?  Something different for supper??  TIA
