Wow JKTmum, thanks for your post! I'm glad it all turned out OK! Do you happen to remember if they saw a mass on the ultrasound or mammogram?

I think they could see something in the duct but not a solid mass (more fluid swelling), that was why they did the fine needle biopsy. I can't remember now whether it was prior to seeing the Breast Surgeon or after I had seen her that the biopsy was done. I do remember though the nurse at the biopsy was great and held my hand throughout the procedure (my DH wasn't able to go with me, he had to mind the kids), and it wasn't nearly as painful as I had imagined it would be, was actually surprised when they said it was all done as it was more pressure than painful.

My Breast surgeon was great too, she ended up operating on Kylie Minogue several months later.

Thank you for your support guys.

JKT, thanks for answering! Must have been scary, I'm glad they took care of you! My sister also said that the biopsies weren't so bad. This from a lady who used to pass out at blood tests - she's been an absolute champion through the treatment.

The ultrasound report was all clear, except for some ductal ectasia - which from my googling basically means I'm getting old, or at least my boobs are! - but could cause the symptom.
Anyway, will book the consultation and see where we go from here.

I hope you don't have to wait too long to get in to see the specialist.

I have my specialist appointment this afternoon. Of course the bleeding stopped yesterday! After 3 weeks! Replaced by some noticeable tenderness (same side only). Tmi - *** On Tuesday I had a 20c piece size blood stain in my bra, that has been pretty standard, consistently, everyday for the last 3 weeks. Maybe there'll be some more again before my appointment...
I admit, it's starting to stress me out.

Anyway, I have a disc from the radiology department with my ultrasound and mammogram pictures, my blood reports, and we'll see what the surgeon says.

would it be strange to pop a bra with the blood stain into a plastic bag and take to appointment? Not sure if that is weird though! but maybe could help give them idea of what was happening if bleeding stopped (area, amount etc).

Thanks guys!
I actually just spoke to my sister and her port got infected so treatment cancelled today. Bummer.
When In Rome, I had the same idea and saved Tuesday's bra, but I didn't know if that was weird...

Not weird at all.  Doctors frequently get given descriptions by patients which are as good as useless - 'lots' for example can mean anything.  Evidence is perfect.

I think take it. Just say like "oh I had some blood on my bra, I've heard some people take them in to show the doctor" and the doctor says "oh yeah those weirdos" and you say "hahaha yeah those weirdos" and quickly shove it back in your bag?

Hey best of luck and hope you and your sister are better soon x

So quickly that the strap hangs out, catching on the outside train door handle as you dash for the train, just before the door closes , leaving it waving in the breeze all the way to the next station.

So I had my appointment. Surgeon thinks that it is likely just the ectasia causing the blood, but especially with the family history they have to rule out other things first.
She was unable to see any of the blood today (of course!) and I only had a couple of light drops in my bra so it didn't look so bad and I felt like an idiot. I didn't show my old bra, too intimidated and there wasn't really a good moment.

At first she said an mri was the next step. After discussion of which area I thought the affected duct was - it only seems to come from one spot - and looking at the ultrasound pics again she decided that there was a possible area to double check (she said possible thickening I think?) So I need a repeat ultrasound focussing on that area and probably a biopsy straight away (depending on the ultrasound). I'll make those appointments tomorrow. Then I see her again for a follow up.
I'm supposed to not squeeze but use something like a makeup removal pad and bring some of them in next time.

But she's really not worried, so I'm not stressing. Apparently there's no treatment for ectasia, it just goes away on its own.

Thanks for letting me talk it through and thanks for the support!

Just a quick update. I had my follow up ultrasound on Thursday. They had a good look at the suspected area and found something to look into, the suspected duct area has something that shows up gray rather than black on the ultrasound - so there's something in there. The technician said that it didn't look especially concerning because it compressed (so not a hard mass).
Anyway, they want to do a core biopsy which I have booked for next week.
I'm not too worried, but slightly thrown - I expected the ultrasound to clear me.
The bleeding has stopped.

Thanks for asking my*sweet*kiddies.

Sorry I haven't updated, crazy life.

I went to have my biopsy last Tuesday. They did another ultrasound, decided that whatever it was was clearing on its own, from the progression through the last 3 ultrasounds the duct was less dilated. No need for a biopsy. I haven't had any more symptoms.
So they have given me the all clear, it turned out to be nothing nasty.
