Hi everyone,
Can anyone shed some light on the best choice? Travel is not an issue. We have been accepted to both and not sure which one to choose for our son. Any feedback would be very appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi, I can only speak for St Josephs but we have been very happy with it. You say travel is not an issue (fair enough) but those schools aren't exactly next door to each other! I assume you live in the Hawthorn parish boundaries to get a place at St J's?

Thanks for your reply. We actually live in Balwyn but used to live in hawthorn, that's how we knew about St Joseph's. Driving from Balwyn won't be an issue as we will just eventually move back to hawthorn if we choose st J. Both are good schools so decision is hard!

I don't know St Josephs but St Bede's is a great school, lovely principal, community atmosphere.

Where do you eventually see yourselves living as a family -what sort of neighbourhood?

THanks for the reply. We have lived in both Balwyn and hawthorn so happy to live in either suburb.
We will probably stay in the eastern burbs

Both are good schools and friends at both are very happy. Although they do constantly complain about parking at st josephs!
Which parish do you live in? This will most likely impact where you can apply as boundaries are generally enforced unless it's a low intake year. Offers have already been made for foundation for next year though if that's when you're looking for?

Thanks Fossy. We live on bakeyn currently but have had offers for prep next year for both. We are in st bedes parish but my husband is wanting to move back to hawthorn possibly in future.

I would go for whatever's closest then, traffic, as you would know, isn't exactly delightful around there.
Nice to live close to school for proximity to friends etc too.
Good luck :)

If the driving isn't an issue, I would choose what is close now. Make it easier to make friends, have playdates etc.

If you do eventually move to Hawthorn, then you can do the commute to Balwyn until a place at St Joseph's comes up.

Hi there, which school did you decide on if I may ask? Would love to hear some feedback on St Josephs if you have children enrolled. Tia

Hi mother’s joy
So sorry I just saw your message!
We haven’t been ecstatic with st Joeys. Not sure if we will stay for year one.  Very large numbers in classes, some have 29 kids in the class. School very keen to impress parents so al events very nice etc
Some kids might thrive in this atmosphere but to me it’s too many kids and a lot them can be quite badly behaved

Oh dear, thanks pollie79 for your reply and your honest feedback.

We have my daughter enrolled to start prep next year. I really hope it will be a suitable fit.

Have you considered an alternative?

We have looked at local schools but yet to commit.  Our child  is happy to leave too!  I hope your daughter has a great experience. As I said, I’m sure some kids thrive and perhaps we just had a bad year

Just thought I’d put in the good word for Glenferrie Primary. My DS is going there next year and we’ve been impressed by the staff and have noticed a general air of relaxed friendliness from the other parents. It’s a much smaller school than St Josephs too - only two Prep classes next year. I know a few parents of kids in other grades at Glenferrie who are all happy with the school.
Just my two cents 🙂....
