Can anyone in Canberra recommend a good maths tutor for a grade five student - one that explains clearly. We have had our child tutored by a chain tutoring company and their explaining of certain concepts confuses me - no wonder my son is confused.

I've heard good things about bright sparks tutoring (they do in-home, one on one).

Also, whilst a chain, NorthShore get great results. There are also some 'airtasker' / airbnb style platforms where private tutors advertise, are rated by clients etc. Might be worth looking at tutorfinder, first tutors and tutoring for excellence sites.

Don't be afraid to ask potential tutors for recommendations, names / numbers of previous clients.

And you could also try advertising to University of Canberra's teaching students - plenty of maths teachers in the making...

You also could try asking a local college to ask their Maths teachers if they have any year 11 or 12 students who would be willing (and capable).

When I was looking for a maths tutor for my son, I just searched for 'maths tutor' and my town name in facebook and came up with a heap of recommendations made on local fb pages and groups. It was helpful because people had lots of reviews. I contacted two of the names that consistently came up with good feedback, and ended up with one of them and she has been amazing. I'd never have found her otherwise - no mutual friends - but fb came through for me!
