Its over and done with now, DP took him this afternoon. He came home crying like a baby and said he felt awful, it took three vials of medication to get him sleepy. But he did say he was calm and not flipping out so that's something.
Its hard not to feel sh*t, but I do know we did the right thing. The vet even said wow that's got big since he was last here and assured us his prognosis was never going to be any different so as not to second guess what we were doing.
Kids seem ok, eldest is miserable and carrying his collar around everywhere but also agreed she thought it was time for him. Overall everyone's just a bit drained tonight, but there is a hint of relief in there somewhere too.
Thanks everyone for the nice comments over the last month or so, it has helped.
