I am wondering if maybe someone who works in a QLD kindy program, or just knows more about them then me, might be able to give some in sight.
My child will be starting school next year and attends a long day care centre three days a week. The centre gets the kindy funding. They have one kindy room with up to 44 kids (4 adults) on any one day. There is an early childcare educator there each day (not sure of the exact hours).
I think they have too many kids together for a few reasons, they don't seem to be able to keep track of anything (for example if a kid doesn't have a hat they can't play outside and a carer will assume the hat is at home, although two other staff would have seen the hat on the kid an hour ago). But also how is my child (and any others in a similar situation) possibly getting their funded hours of kindergarten program?
Is this normal?

That is within the ratios allowed in Qld 1:11 but that is a very daycare. I would not be happy with that number of children within one room for exactly the reasons you mention. My daycare has 24 children in a room which is more than enough they have a 1:10 ratio required but always do slightly higher than the required.

I am just a parent, but my son goes to kindergarten this year, he will start school next year.
His Kindy have two rooms, with approx 22 kids in each room. Each room has one qualified teacher that works approximately 8-4pm each day. Each room also has at least one carer or assistant, but often there are more.
The Kindy operates from 6-6pm, but all of the structured learning is done whilst the actual teacher is there. At other times you will have two carers per 22 kids.
At our kindy, all of the staff work together beautifully, all of the carers know my son/ all of the other kids and really just continue on after 4pm, and I would assume before 8am.
We have a long day model but it is only Kindy aged kids.
When my daughter went to Kindy at a long day care, the hours were a bit more random, and there were a lot of mixing of younger kids with the Kindy kids and changing of staff all of the time.

Your daycare sounds like many. Pop a qualified (or someone studying early childhood bachelors) as the lead educator in a room from 9-4; get the qld govt funding per child; not lower fees in any way and keep going business as usual.
If the teacher or student is any good then I’m sure your Ds is getting a good prgram though.
I’m a bit cynical about the whole thing and when I found out that the ‘kindy teacher’ supposedly necessary to qualify for funding can actually be a student paid a pittance then my cynicism grew.

Not in QLD - VIC but much the same happens here.
I work in a place that is only kindergarten, I know you have them there my relatives moved from daycare to a C&K kindergarten.
Now many Long day Care centres do run fantastic programs, they have special kindergarten rooms, proper staffing etc and it is exactly what it should be.
Others happily take the funding, don't actually quarantine it on the kindy program and cut corners where ever they can.
Sounds like you are one of them.
Even if you are unable to attend one, go and tour a local C&K or only kindergarten centre to get an idea of what a kindergarten program should look like.

I'm in Vic but DS did sessional kinder and 1 day of daycare kinder per week. We had a trained kinder teacher for the 4 year old group at daycare. She actually preferred daycare kinder to sessional as she got full time hours.
Her room was different to the other daycare rooms, she set up different play spaces every week on different themes like space, she had the kids cooking, doing art that was related to a topic. She had an electronic whiteboard and a mat area. She had a writing/sign in station for the kids to write their name. She also set up a monthly field trip to s local library and a retirement village. Kids also did show and tell. She pretty much did things very similar to the sessional kinder.
DS's sessional kinder had 1 lead educator and 3 assistants to 27 kids (I think there was a child with additional needs who qualified for an aide) and we did fortnightly bush kinder sessions as well.
If your kinder room runs just like how the other rooms do and doesn't seem to have the bridging towards school, I personally would be worried. Are there parent teacher interviews? I would be asking questions about what the kinder teacher is actually putting forth as a program. Yes, I agree, 44 kids in a class is too big, it's bigger than most FYOS classes. It might be worth looking elsewhere.
