Hi, I hope this topic is appropriate! But I'm a bit (seriously!) concerned, so thought I'd ask you lovely ladies...

There is a chance that hubby and I will need to move house to Camberwell (from inner west), Vic. We'll find out for sure by August. We can postpone the move by a few months, but would rather move sooner than later.

What is the childcare situation in Camberwell like? I had a hard time getting DS in a centre here, so I'm guessing it's similar in C'well? Should I put his name down for some places now? Any recommended places?

Haha I know I sound like I'm stressing over something that might not happen, but in my current suburb, wait lists are over a year long! But I also don't want to get offered a childcare spot soon and have to say, "no sorry, we won't know if we need the place till July/August"

Please haaalp :(

I don't know Camberwell itself but I can tell you that around Kew/Kew East (which is pretty close) a number of new centres have opened in the last year which has relieved a lot of pressure on waiting lists.   There is a centre behind the Camberwell shops (technically Hawthorn East I think) which advertises a lot - I've heard its not that popular though...…..

There is an excellent community based childcare centre which would have long waiting lists.  Samanthas which is the southern side of Camberwell has had a good longstanding reputation.

You might also be shocked by the daily fee at some of the childcare centres in this area, particularly the newer ones.....  Not sure of your DS's age but the private schools around the area run 9-3 kindergarten programs which some people use instead of childcare.

I used one of the community/council run centres in Camberwell for five years 10 years ago and was really happy with it.  The wait lists were pretty long and it was hard to get in the babies room unless you were a sibling.  Older rooms with lower ratios are a bit easier.

I managed to get in reasonably quickly due to priority of access, but that was still 9months.  They do main intake at the start of the year so I would enquire/ apply now.

I also used Samanthas - the one in Seymore Grove - which was ok, but the council one was better and cheaper.

Oh, thank you so much! <3 :)

I'll get on the wait list for Samantha's then - I'm guessing the waits for private school-run centres would be insane?

I wouldn't mind a bit of travel, eg to Hawthorn or Burwood even, but I guess I better get DS's name on those lists and bow out if our plans don't work out :/

Which is the council run one? DS will be in the 2yr+ room so hopefully not too much pressure - I guess we'll check out the Kew/Kew East centres too.

Good to hear about the new centres opening! I'm looking forward to a move but the childcare situation is soo stressful! :(

Hi OP, I was in your position about 6 months ago.  As PP have mentioned, the Camberwell area has a number of smaller, community based centres but it is difficult to get a spot.  There are some newer and larger private centres opening up (e.g. Only About Children in both Camberwell and Hawthorn) although the prices are quite steep!  We ended up choosing a newer centre in Hawthorn and are happy with it (I can PM you the details).

OAC, tiggers and the learning sanctuary all had vacancies recently.  Also good start box hill south on Canterbury road and the one on warrigal road across from wattle park primary (can’t remember the name sorry).  A few new ones have opened up on warrigal road (Burwood and glen iris) that advertise vacancies.
We were offered a place on the spot at Samanths but had heard some bad things and they were a bit too desperate so we declined.

If you look on the  child care finder site I found the vacancy info to be pretty accurate.

Private ELCs start at 3yo so sounds like your child would be too young. They’re pretty easy to get into though.

Good luck.
