OK so got my tax back and I think they have overpaid me, I'm going to call them tomorrow.
I have got $6000 back with a extra $1200 that shouldn't be there.
Have never been over paid tax before so is there a special no I need to call?

What do you mean an extra $1200 that shouldn't be there.

Did you calculate an estimate before you submitted your return?

Have you had a look at your assessment on the ATO site?

How does the assessment differ from your submission?

Could it be the rebate?

Jump onto myGov, estimate is just a estimate and final calculation can be different. MyGov will show you what the final payment they calculated should be if it matches that I wouldn’t be calling. If it’s different to what myGov says then a call would be warranted.

Has centrelink done their adjustment as well?

If it were a random sum of money I would certainly investigate with the bank. However being from the ATO I would just take their calculations as being correct eg I don't claim ftb through the year and get the whole lot in July. I don't question their working out as it's too complicated for me.

Go to your myGov and check what they paid you and look at what you submitted.

They aren’t generally too keen to give our money that you aren’t entitled too, so personally I wouldnt bother ringing.

do you pay child care? I've got a similar 'extra' amount back before and it was the 5% that they withhold from your subsidy
