My son is 14.  We have a general rule that his girlfriend can’t come over if we are not there.  Other friends are fine as long as we know.

My 10 year old also makes his own way from school and is home with his older brother till we get home from work at 6 or so.  He brought a friend home unexpectedly this week and I had to say that wasn’t okay.   I’m fine for them to go to the park together after school but not fine to have young children at our house while I’m not there.  Probably because in my house they are under my care and I’m not there.  At the park, it’s at your own risk.

ETA We have had to think through our rule over the summer holidays.  We have a nice house and a pool.  We want it to be welcoming to DS’s friends.  I wasn’t sure about allowing unsupervised friends and swimming while we weren’t home.  In the end we decided it was mostly fine on a case by case basis.  Where there were 3 of them and they were sensible children that we knew, swimming was fine without us.   More and there was more room for silliness and not allowed.
