After some advice if anyone has experienced this. Last year we incurred a Centrelink debt. I am on a repayment plan for this. When our tax is completed this week I am trying to figure out if after balancing the money will go right onto that debt if I was underpaid which I think I was. Online searches say most likely outcome is the money goes into the debt first. Has this been your experience?

DH has a debt and still received his return, I was expecting it to be taken. On another forum I've seen many others have theirs taken so I am not sure what is causing some to be taken and not others.

Interesting it's hard to work out. I assumed the return would be paid to me but now I am not sure. Time will tell.

Greatmum sounds like your tax(?) refund was before the debt was raised OP has a debt already and I think is asking her FTB balancing will go to that debt.
Based on BadCat’s link it will:
“Previously, to recover family assistance debts, we could use family assistance end of year top-ups, lump sum and supplement payments. From 10 June 2019, we’re now using your FTB payments, including arrears to recover other Centrelink debts you may have. We can do this even if you have a payment arrangement in place. Read more about balancing your family assistance payments.”

Mine didnt either. I have had the debt now for a wile and have been paying it off.
I expected my return to be automatically sucked up, but it went straight in to my bank account. I have paid it in full last week. As of yesterday though it was still not showing as paid.
I know its supposed to get swiped to pay the debt so im not sure why it didnt.
