Need Diet help.

For over a year I've had ongoing tummy pain, It started when I had a miscarriage, I've since visited a GP and a specialist and had every test under the sun. I don't have cancer, Crohn's, coeliac, no dairy or gluten issues either. I've had a gastroscopy and colonoscopy and nil results. I also have no retained product or anything in ovaries to indicate anything is wrong.

The specialist has suggested going onto anti-depressants to see if that eases the stomach pain. I agree it's much worse when I'm incredibly stressed, and I noticed some food set it off, for example I can't have rice crackers or too much cheese, just cheese in a small amounts, nothing that's slathered in oil either. I can't hack IKEA meatballs either. however there are some days where all the above foods can be absolutely fine and no effects. So it's thrown me for a loop.

I tried Low FODmap with some success, but I haven't been that consistent with it. Honestly I'm not sure where to even start. I do wonder if I have IBS.

Since all specialists have closed doors due to the virus, our call was over the phone and chaotic at best because two kids with cabin fever. All I'm left with is ADs and not much more to go on with.

So While I try these ADs for 3 months as requested by specialist I'm wondering what I can do diet wise to ease the symptoms.

Has anyone faced anything similar? I'd really appreciate your suggestions.  TIA!

I've had tummy pains on and off for ages. It got really bad when I was living in Sydney, I was always bloated and had inconsistent bowel movements. I've always had issues with onion and garlic but it felt like loads of things were setting me off. I tried degas and it didn't really help. I then went onto FODMAP and it helped a bit.

What really helped was when I was TTC I went on a fertility diet - no alcohol, cut out nearly all caffeine (one black tea a day), no sugar, no 'white' stuff (wholegrain bread only, brown/black rice, no pasta), loads of vegies, small amounts of meat and fish daily. Basically nothing processed if I could help it. Interestingly after barely eating any dairy all my life I tolerated full fat milk and yogurt very well and small amounts of cheese (fetta and goats cheese mainly, not yellow cheese).

Those 15 months were the best ever. My skin was glowing, I lost 7kg (was already slim), people at work told my I looked "amazing", I slept the best I ever had and I ate loads of food so was well fed. This was despite doing back to back fertility treatments that whole time.

When I got pregnant I could basically only eat weetbix and porridge for a while so it fell off a cliff and I felt crap. But once I could start eating better later into my pregnancy I felt much better again. Now with a small baby I do my best to stick to this too so I can have energy, with the addition of a piece or 2 of home made cake!

The fertility diet is loosely a Mediterranean-diabetic (my own naming). For any people that have read "it starts with an egg" all my recommendations come from there

CKmelb, it's funny you say that because I had these tummy issues prior to DS and it disappeared after I fell pregnant with him.

it came back after the m/c. I dread the idea of giving up coffee & wine though, it's my life with this home schooling crap! lol

Sorry to hear you’ve had issues, I recently just got well after experiencing this for about a year on and off. This may be a bit long winded but I thought I’d share as I completely understand your pain as this was me !

I went to my GP after being at my wits end due to stomach bloating, cramps and pain. I put it down to stress and maybe having IBS that is related to stress and I already eat relatively healthy but I cut everything out and still experienced issues.  However, my GP said before she diagnosed me with IBS that she wanted to rule out anything else. I did a stool test, blood test the lot.

Well, they found a parasite called blastocyctisis which is apparently in many people who have no symptoms with a percentage of people experiencing bloating, cramps, etc.
They usually don’t treat it with antibiotics unless you are showing symptoms and discomfort as the treatment is a triple course of antibiotics. The issue for me was that my high stress levels plus the parasite meant that I was experiencing lots of pain and discomfort.

I was put on three types of antibiotics for 10 days and I have absolutely no issues now, still have lots of stress etc but stomach is completely fine. I was too scared to eat or anything before because I thought it was all diet - it was actually the underlying common parasite.

So I’m not sure if you’ve tested with a GP but it may be an idea - otherwise it could be IBS in which case FODMAP is meant to be very good.

I am not a doctor, but gosh that makes me think gallbladder problems. Ie. it’s inconsistent and worse if you eat fatty food like dairy (or large meals - not that you mentioned it).

Anyway, if you read the symptoms and it sounds like you... the food suggested is just healthy, high fibre food like fruit, vege, lentils, lean meat...

One of my sisters has similar problems - she does have diagnosed IBS though. The only two things that work for her are a very strict LowFODMAP diet, which she found hard to stick to long-term, and an AD, Endep, which acts on the vagus nerve to calm her symptoms down.

I thought the same. Before he got it removed, DH would have gallbladder pain every time he ate fatty foods.

I thought gall bladder too, especially with the inability to eat really oily food!

With my gall stones, I couldn't reproduce the symptoms reliably. Sometimes I got away with eating the quiche... other times I didn't. :p

IBS is just about eliminating other causes - if he other causes are eliminated its probably most likely IBS.

Have you have scopes done? My doctor and specialist said this is important to rule out certain diseases, coeliac in particular, as blood tests often dont give accurate results especially if you arent eating a lot of gluten..

I have IBS - sometime I can eat certain things and its ok but most of the time I just cant eat certain foods at all, so I mostly avoid them altogether.

Its no fun planning your life around the availability of a toilet. I wish more people understood but a lot of people just dont get it.

Have they tested your cortisol levels?
High cortisol can result in aches and pains in the body that would otherwise be unexplained.

I had severe cramps after my last miscarriage for months,  they couldn’t find anything wrong they didn’t know about, tested my cortisol and was extremely high, as we got cortisol down the cramps subsided.

It may not be the case, but may worth asking if they have tested it.
