I hope St Nicholas leaves you lots of yummy things, and not just salt, and I ESPECIALLY hope that you haven't been so bad that Black Peter hauls you off to the coal mines.

Cheers

LOL - I thought we were the only ones who left our shoes out!

On that note..... have you ever tried stuffing a pair of thongs with oranges and sweets - damn DH and his thong obsession  blush.gif

In lots of cultures, Christmas Day is kept as a religious day, and the day you get your presents and goodies is St Nicholas Day, which is December 6.  You put your shoes out, and if you have been good, you get yummy things in it.  If you have been bad, you get it filled with salt.  And if you have been VERY bad, St Nick's sidekick, Black Peter, pops you into his bag and hauls you off to the coal mines.

Of course, the advantage of having a mixed heritage is that you get to celebrate St Nicholas Day AND Christmas Day and anything else you choose.

I hope the good Sint was kind to you Lyndal :-)

Cheers

My Mum still recounts her favourite St Nicks present - when she was little they were very poor and lived in post-war refugee camps in Austria and Yugoslavia (before migrating to Australia when she was 13).  One year she got an orange - not only was it a really special treat but she interpreted it as being a sign that she had been very good that year.  It always reminds me what Christmas is really about.
