New thread time ladies.
Posted 15 October 2009 - 09:45 PM
Ooh a new thread! Lucky I checked...I actually came in here because I have been forgetting all day but didn't want to let the day go by without wishing Alex a very Happy 3rd Birthday! Hope he had an enjoyable day and loved all of his presents!
And just to copy and paste my last post from the old thread to start this one off again:
Yep, it is incredibly quiet here. I don't have too much to report. Ryley has been moved up to the kinder room at childcare (where he goes one day a week, since mid-July). His teacher told me today that he actually started talking there today, for the first time, so maybe he is feeling comfortable at last. He has also started antibiotics to try and clear up his ear infection/fluid, so fingers crossed that works and he won't need grommets.
And I found out last week that I need to have 4 wisdom teeth out and, due to my age and the fact that nerves go right through the roots of my teeth, it will be a very difficult and risky operation. Great! My very first op too (the only previous time I have been to hospital was to have Ryley!) It's not only going to be painful physically, but it's going to hurt the hip pocket too
By the way, I used to be part of an October mum's group on another forum and there was a mum there who named her little girl Natalia too - a beautiful name

Hi Kristin. Bad news about the teeth - wisdom teeth seem to cause nothing but pain and poverty .... I've had mine out also, but I had them done one at a time over many years. Are you getting all four done at once ? I'm gathering if you are you'll be out cold for the procedure ? For me the worst would be the cost - I can handle some pain and swelling, but don't like to pay for the priviledge !
That's good news about your little boy. From your other posts I gather he's a late talker - has his ear infection been an ongoing issue for him or is there something else bothering his ears ? I really feel for little kids most of the time - you take for granted how easy it is to communicate to someone how you're feeling, either physically or emotionally. Imagine going back to being 2 or three - so hard. How often does he go to daycare ? Do you work ? If so, what do you do ?
No news for me. School is good - I'm doing a hairdressing apprenticeship 3 days a week. I've just started so should hopefully be done in about 8 months. Other than that it's been a good week. DH was off a lot this week, so always nice to have him around ! Saw a cute chick flick last night - Couples Retreat. Not much on plot, but it did make me want to come straight home and give DH a huge kiss.
Have a lovely weekend.

Yep, I'm having all 4 teeth out in hospital under general anaesthetic. The first surgeon I saw, who specialises in wisdom teeth, told me he wouldn't touch them as it was too risky so he referred me to a specialist maxillofacial surgeon. He too said it would be a difficult and risky operation, but doable (fortunately I have lucked on a surgeon who actually teaches others to be able to operate on people with my "unique problems", so I am in good hands). It's going to cost around $3000 (but I will get a small amount back through medicare, so I think the final cost will be about $2600).
And yes, Ryley is a late talker. They have told me it is due to two reasons - genetic (DH didn't start talking til he was 4), and hospitalisation (he was born with a serious bowel disease and spent much of his first 6 months in hospital). He had a hearing test 6 months ago and everything was fine. He has since been in speech therapy for 6 sessions (July-September) and he is coming along well except for his pronunciation as he continually chops off the first sound in every word. This they have put down to his hearing loss, which they have just picked up (due to colds over the winter months, of which he has had heaps as he has a lower immune system than a 'normal' child apparently. I do give him probiotics and multi-vitamins though to help him ward against stuff like that).
He only goes to childcare (or kinder as it is called now that he has been put up with the bigger kids - they run a kinder program at the childcare centre, which is great) one day a week. That is the only day I go to work, as the rest of the time I work from home. I am an intellectual property and legal manager, handling trade marks, plants breeders rights, patents, contracts, etc for a plant marketing company.
I have heard of Couples Retreat (is that the Vince Vaughn one?) and think it's one I'd like to see. I love chick flicks! I am booked to see Twilight and New Moon when it comes out next month too, so I am looking forward to that.
Whereabouts are you from? Are you working while you are doing the hairdressing apprenticeship? (What I mean is, is it a practical apprenticeship that you learn on the job or do you have to go to classes?)
Are you planning on anymore children?
We aren't - that ship has sailed! LOL Due to Ryley's disease and the risk it could happen again, DH is pretty much against having anymore, plus he is 41 (in a couple of weeks) and I am 37 (38 in April), so we have decided that Ryley will be our one and only. As we say, we can't improve on perfection anyway, so why try?!!!
Posted 17 October 2009 - 04:41 PM
Glad you managed to find a surgeon not scared of taking on a tough job, sounds like you'll be in safe hands. When are you getting it done ?
I know quite a few kids who started late on a range of different things - walking, talking, etc, and they all seem to catch up in the end. My daughter has a small lisp that I'm going to keep my eye on, but I think at this young age there's so much going on and so much information flooding their brains, that it all sorts itself out in the end. He sounds like the speech therapy is working well, glad to hear it. In a few months you won't be able to keep him quiet !
I'm doing my apprenticeship Tues, Thurs and Sat's. My mum has her during the week which is great. I'm doing it at an academy so unfortunately it's unpaid ! My fault for leaving it so long, really, but better late than never. I'm loving it so much, and plan to work for myself doing mobile/at home hairdressing once I'm qualified. I'm already a freelance makeup artist, so the two will go well together. We're planning on trying for another baby around Christmas this year - we're off to England as DH is from there, so while on holiday we'll give it a go. But I wanted the larger age gap just to sort my head out a bit - after having Natalia I wasn't really in a very good place. So fingers crossed we won't have any issues TTC again.
I'm in Melbourne, in Camberwell if you know Melbourne at all. How about you ?
Posted 18 October 2009 - 08:50 AM
I think hairdressing is a great career to combine with kids! And I remember using a mobile hairdresser myself when I was younger (well, my mum used her). What a good idea. And if you are combining that with make-up, think of all the work you will get (with weddings, debs, etc).
I am from Melbourne too. Used to live in Balwyn (from primary school through to end of secondary school years). Now I am in the outer eastern suburbs as that is where DH was living when I met him (though he grew up in Doncaster).
Posted 19 October 2009 - 08:34 PM
Well, if things go to plan, ie I'm actually a GOOD hairdresser, then it should combine well with motherhood.
Yay, another Melbourne girl ! First time I've met another EB'er from the same state !
Posted 21 October 2009 - 10:45 PM
I'm sure you'll do just fine as a hairdresser
And really? You haven't found any other EBers from Melbourne? I have though it does seem like a lot on here are from Qld and WA for some reason.
How is Natalia going?
I took Ryley back to the GP yesterday as I wanted to get a referral to a paed at RCH who specialises in continence issues (I am starting to worry about Ryley not TTing yet, even though our surgeon has told me not to panic, that he will do it later than average). I also got him to check Ryley's ears to see if the ABs have worked and lo and behold, they haven't. The GP said it looks like he'll have to have grommets, so we now have a referral to an ENT surgeon (the appointment is booked for a few days after Ryley's follow up with the audiologist - and the audiologist is still hopeful that things could improve in the next couple of weeks, when the appointment is, if we have some warmer weather). Fingers crossed as I'd like to avoid surgery for him if I can, although I sort of think it'd be good too as it is a quick fix to his speech problems (apparently). I know, I am all over the place!
I feel like my life has revolved around medical appointments lately, between Ryley and myself. I'll be happy for a break (in late January, it should all be over, apart from Ryley's standard surgical follow-ups which he has quarterly).

I found you!!!
I totally lost this thread!!
Had been watching the old one for new posts and thought oh its gone quiet again!! Then I realised it had closed!! Silly me!!
I cant stay for long, just checking up on you!
I have been sick with food poisoning so am trying to regain some strength!
Kristin good luck with your wisdom teeth, I had all 4 out years and years ago, wasnt much fun but 1 thing I will suggest is keep an ice pack on as much as you can for at least the first 24 hours!!
Sorry Ryley looks like he will have to have grommets
When was Ryleys Birthday again? I cant remember the date sorry Happy Birthday to him anyway!!
Mel I am from NE Vic, near Albury Wodonga. My cousin has her own hairdressing bus, she just works from home and whenever she wants! I used her to do my hair for my wedding!
Good luck with your training! I love having my hair done!!
Happy Birthday to Natalia too, I possibly wont be in before her birthday, pretty busy weekend and then work
Better fly sorry girls, will catch up properly next week
Have a great weekend!!

Kristin I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Ryley ! About the TT - I know several children, both girls and boys who haven't started TT yet for various reasons, so please don't worry. TBH it's been a nightmare for us - still ongoing. She's managed a few more poos in the loo in the last couple of days, but will only do it for DH, not me ! So today at mother's group, it was the usual - crapped herself...we're off to England in 8 weeks and I was really hoping we'd have knocked this on the head by then. Doesn't look likely.
We're all ok. I've been thinking a lot the last couple of weeks about TTC again, but I told DH last night that if I'm really honest, I'm just not sure still. I feel guilty for feeling that way, but I kind of feel like I'm just starting on a new career, one I've wanted in some way or another since I was a teenager, and I don't want to put any of it on hold for any reason. It's selfish, I know, but I've realised I am a bit like that, and the worst thing would to be to have a child ujst for the sake of someone else, or the wrong reasons. So I'm thinking maybe I'll stop putting the pressure on myself and just push it back a bit - 35 is still "young" right ?????
So Bec you're another VIC girl, that's good to hear. Did you read in the VIC section that there's an EB catch up being organised in November. It's at the Collingwood Children's Farm, not sure of the date but it's a Thursday. I would have gone if not at hairdressing - are either of you making it ? ( Bec, maybe a bit far for you to go ??!!) I think they're also trying to arrange a dinner, too. Maybe I'll be brave and go along...
Posted 23 October 2009 - 07:12 PM
Yeah, I don't think I would've liked TTing, even with a 'normal' kid! Seems like so much hard work!
Have fun in England - you lucky bugger (are you going for Christmas?).
As for TTC, what does your husband say about what you told him last night? Does he mind? You still have a bit of time up your sleeve anyway. I was 34 and a half when I had Ryley, and he was my first. Women are having babies later and later now anyway. My mum's friend had her first at 41 and her second at 44 (that's not for me, but obviously for some it is ok). You do it when it feels right.
Bec, hope you are feeling a little better - must have been a nasty bout of food poisoning! Ryley's birthday was the 3rd - I think you already wished him a happy birthday How did Alex's birthday go or were you too ill to properly celebrate?
I can't remember if I already posted this but on Ryley's birthday we took him to the Thomas concert and then a week later we took him to meet Thomas at Puffing Billy - he loved it! It's so nice seeing him so happy
Mel what have you got planned for Natalia's birthday?
Posted 23 October 2009 - 08:47 PM
I haven't taken Natalia on Puffing Billy yet - we must book it in. His birthday sounds like it was a lot of fun.
Danny is really great about the whole TTC thing. He said he wasn't surprised, as I'd mentioned it a while back briefly. He just said not to stress, that we don't have to make any decisions yet, and I think that's what I'll do. We'd said that this trip ( we leave on Dec 18 for a month ) would be the start of TTC, but I'm really not up for it. I want to wait till I've finished my course, and then want to try and get work in a salon. Then maybe after a bit of experience I'll see how I feel. I'm lucky - he's very supportive. He's just gone through a career change as well in the last year, one that we sacrificed a fair bit for. But we're firm believers in happiness over money, and being strong as a couple. So I've got a great hubby !
It's Nat's birthday on Wednesday - we're just having a bbq down at a local park on Wednesday afternoon, with friends from mother's group and some family. We'll have a cake and baloons but nothing extravagent. Kids birthdays can go so OTT, I'm really going to try and avoid all that if I can, and just keep it simple. So should be a good day.
On a side issue - I'm watching the CRAPPEST movie on Foxtel - New In Town - anyone seen it ? It's so bad it's not even good, in a bad way...if you get me. Shocker.
Posted 24 October 2009 - 09:58 AM
Nice to hear you have such a supportive husband. I think it's very important that both parties are heard and can come to an agreement as it is such a huge decision. And you do still have time anyway so no need to rush into anything.
I also agree in happiness over money. I have been married before, and we were fairly well off. Now I am married again and we aren't as rich money-wise but I am so much happier. It's very true that money doesn't buy happiness.
And I agree with you about kids birthdays. Ryley only had a party for his 1st birthday and hasn't had one since (we have chosen to do family outings instead). I fugure he doesn't really have any friends yet, so who is the party for? There is plenty of time, when he does get older and has some friends, to spend money on parties. Until then, I prefer to do it low-key.
Who is in that movie? I don't think I have heard of it. I borrowed a dvd from my mum the other day, a Keanu Reeves movie 'A Walk in the Clouds' - shocking! I fast forwarded through most of the show! Keanu is good to look at, but he cannot act!

Kristin - it's got Harry C Jr, and Renee Zelweiger ( right spelling ? ) I usually can't stand her, but I thought I'd give her one last chance......... that's the last I'll ever see of her "cat's bum" face on my tv !

Happy Birthday Natalia! Mel, hope you had a lovely day today at your bbq, celebrating Natalia's big 3rd birthday!
Posted 29 October 2009 - 06:53 AM
Happy Birthday Natalia!!!! Welcome to the big wide world of 3 year olds!!!
Hope you had a great day and the BBQ was fun!!
Sorry Im late, didnt get on here till today
Posted 29 October 2009 - 06:58 PM
Thank you both ! She had a lovely day - kept saying very solemnly " I'll never be 2 again" and when she woke up this morning the first thing she said to me was "am I still 3 mum ?" Bless....
You both having a nice week ?
Posted 12 November 2009 - 09:44 PM
It's been ages since we last 'spoke'!
Ryley has been for a follow up hearing test and he doesn't need grommets at this stage (apaprently his ear infection has improved, with the warmer weather). He will go for yet another hearing test just before christmas. He also started group speech therapy sessions today (they are weekly and run for 7 weeks). He seems to be the youngest in the group and I wonder if he is a little too immature for it, but by the end of today's session he was better (he was shocking at the start, totally not interested in what was going on).
And I have been asked to go back to work 3 days a week - so I am an employee again (rather than a consultant), starting 1st of December. I have been a bit teary about it, as I will miss my little man. 3 days seems like such a lot (I certainly wouldn't do any more), but I think it will benefit him being at kinder/childcare more often (only going once a week means that he quickly forgets each week that he actually likes it once he is there!). And he will be able to form better friendships. It should also help with his speech and other development stuff (maybe even toilet training - oh, minor thing here - I actually got him to sit on the toilet today. What an achievement! LOL )
DH and I are having a date night tomorrow night - going to the drive-in (to see 2012 - I love disaster movies!) I can't remember the last time I went to the drive-in, I think I must have been about 11 or 12. Even better, it was his suggestion (very surprising, as he is not known for being romantic or even capable of thinking of such ideas )
How have you guys been? And your little ones?
We have been having regular playdates with another mum from EB and her daughter who is 2 weeks older than Ryley. They live 2 streets away from us. And Ryley has decided that she is his girlfriend (he also has another girlfriend at kinder). Both are blonde - obviously he has a thing for blondes
Aside from all that, I am getting over another tooth infection - one of my wisdom teeth is now growing into the inside of my cheek. Ouch! Mid January can't come soon enough!
Anyway - enough from me. I want to hear all your news!
Posted 15 November 2009 - 07:14 PM
It's been very quiet, I kept popping in to see if anyone was about, but no such luck !
That's great news about the grommets, Kristin ! You must be so pleased. And the speech therapy, too. I think you feel better when you start to take some steps, and I'm not surprised you've noticed an improvement. He might still be only young, but these things never hurt, and he's getting some special attention that will only make things better, as you've mentioned. Great to hear.
Am so jealous about your "date". I've NEVER been to the drive ins - where is it ? I'm picturing the two of you getting up to no good in the backseat Grease style !
That's nice that you've found another EB'er so close. I made plans the meet up with a girl today which I had to postpone to next Sunday, but I never heard back from her. I'm wondering if she thinks me postponing was a blow-off - I've PM'ed her to ask if all is ok, but it's a bit weird setting up a first meeting, scary even. It feels like a blind date !
Where are you working ? Are you excited ? It's great they want you back when so many are still being laid off - not many workplaces are flexible with part time work - it's nice to know you're wanted, isn't it ? !!
Not much to report from our end. Being so hot we've been swimming loads, which Natalia loves. We're gearing up for England, we leave in about 4 weeks. We've also just decided to stay for 6 rather than 4 weeks, which is exciting. I'm hoping it will snow as Natalia has never seen snow before. Will also be nice to finally introduce her to Daniel's side of the family. Apart from that, just boring stuff. Organising the cats while we're away, thinking about getting a new car, hairdressing stuff, the usual. I'm doing a party next Saturday which I'm really excited about. I've got a 13 year old's birthday - I'm giving them a makeup lesson, then mini makeovers. I've been a makeup artist for years, but really want to get into parties to teach teenaged girls what NOT to do when it comes to makeup, so this is only my second one. Looking forward to it, and hoping it might be the start of a bit more work as there's about 12 girls going. Wish me luck !
Posted 16 November 2009 - 06:59 PM
Yes, I am rapt that Ryley doesn't need grommets (I wasn't looking forward to him having yet another operation ) And I really hope his speech continues to improve. The speech therapist says she can't work on his pronunciation (clarity) until next year as he is still too young now to fully understand. So at the moment we only need to work on expanding his vocab.
The drive-in was great! All day before we went, I kept thinking about Grease as well! And we went in Glenn's ute The drive-in is in Coburg (up behind Pentridge). I liked the movie, but Glenn didn't (he thought it was too far fetched, so he went to sleep instead! Old man! So obviously, we didn't get up to no-good at all LOL ). The story was very unrealistic, but I like those sort of movies for the special effects.
Myself and the other EBer have met up about 4-5 times now and it has been great. Ryley and her daughter play very well together, so it's lovely to see.
I am still at the company I was working with before I got pregnant, and the same company who allowed me to then work as a consultant from home. They have been wonderful to me. It is up in the hills (the Dandenong Ranges) for a plant company. The extra cash will be very handy, but it is also a good opportunity for Ryley to go to kinder more (and get more comfortable with the other kids, as well as helpful for his development). It's a nice way for me to re-enter the workforce too (I was going to eventually, but I was thinking of waiting til Ryley started primary school).
Got some lovely news today too - Glenn's boss has given him a night's stay at the Windsor Hotel (to show his appreciation for all of Glenn's good work this year), complete with bottle of wine on arrival, valet parking and full english breakfast. So we have booked it for the 30th of December (our anniversary is NYE so we will wake up at the luxurious hotel on the morning of our 4th wedding anniversary!).
That sounds great about the makeup party! I have heard that they are all the rage lately with the pre-teens, so it's a great opportunity for you! Have fun! I wish I knew you when I was a tennager and just starting to wear make-up - I was never very good at applying it, and I think only very recently have I finally found the right make-up and the right shade for my skin. I don't worry too much about eye shadow and that stuff though - just foundation, lipstick and mascara.
And wow, 6 weeks now in England!!! Lucky you! Surely it'll snow (it's never nice weather in England anyway is it?! LOL). I adore the snow too. I lived in England when I was a toddler (so don't remember it obviously) but I also lived in Canada for a year and went to school there (grade 6), so experienced living in a lot of snow. And with all this revolting hot weather we have been having, it has made me long for snowy weather even more.
And I am reliving my teenage years this week - I am going to see the midnight release of New Moon on Wednesday night (and watching Twilight before that). I am really looking forward to it! No doubt when Ryley wakes me nice and early on Thursday morning though, I won't be feeling as excited!!!
Posted 02 December 2009 - 10:48 PM
Hellooooooo, anyone here???
Mel, maybe you have gone o/s already? Have a great time (I am sure you will!) Has Natalia ever flown before? Also, how did the teen makeup party go?
Bec, how is Alex doing? Haven't heard from you in a while
I have started back at work, just yesterday actually. But wouldn't you know it, I had today off as Ryley has hand, foot and mouth disease (so the kinder are saying - the doc isn't so sure and Ryley seems quite ok, but does have a couple of spots. The doc says if he has it, it is an extremely mild case, but to be on the safe side he needs to stay home for the rest of the week).
I have finished all my christmas shopping and tonight I wrapped all the presents and put them under the tree. I am so organised this year. I am really looking forward to christmas, as Ryley is getting into it this year, and is very excited. I have completely spoilt him, again, but oh well, I enjoy watching him open his presents - he does this little gasp of surprise, it is so cute! (I could just eat him up, he is so adorable!) Anyway, I will stop gushing now Nothing much else to report (that I can remember).
Posted 04 December 2009 - 09:45 PM
I'm still here, have just been a bit busy and tired of late. I'm detoxing to get ready for our trip ( hoping it'll help drop a few kilos ) so I'm in bed by 9.30 most nights. Am starting to feel more energised, so it must be working.
Speaking of work, great to hear you've started back, Bec, albiet briefly ! Poor Riley - and poor you ! Childhood ilness can be sooo inconvenient - ha ha
We leave in two weeks today. So very busy as I need to finish shopping for family here, and also am doing what I can for family over there before I leave. We've only got about 4 days before X-mas once we arrive, so don't want to be too mad. But we're all very excited, and nervous. I've not gone too mad on presents for Natalia as she'll be getting two lots this year, plus she doesn't seem all that fissed about opening them. At her birthday a few weeks ago she kind of lost interest and went off to play. Not a bad thing I guess, but I doubt it will last !
Not much other news, I'm afraid. Very boring.....
Posted 08 December 2009 - 05:53 PM
I am so very sorry I havent been around much
I have been so busy with work, and now I have been demoted over something really silly. So looks like I may be leaving in the new year. But Im hoping by then I am pregnant and dont have to return to work at all!!
