We had the same issue with DS, and I worked on it over a couple of weeks, gradually sitting closer to the door. I took a book with me, so I would read, and it wouldn't be so much like I was deliberately ignoring him.
We started out with reading a story in bed, and then I tell him I was going to read my own book, and it was time for him to go to sleep. I started out next to the bed, then gradually moved further away. It took a couple of weeks before I could just leave after a few minutes, but for the last week, it was only taking about 10 minutes, so not much of a hassle. He was fines with it, no crying at all. Now I can put him in bed, and I'll tell him I'll be just outside while he goes to sleep, and he's fine. (He's two, but we did it at around 18 months).
If he's sick or over tired I still sit with him until he's asleep.
