Anyone in Bendigo?

I was wondering if any members were in the Bendigo area? DH has applied for a job there and we're hoping to relocate from Melbourne in the next few months :-)
We currently live in Melbourne, but my parents live just out of Bendigo (I never lived there, they moved after I'd flown the coup!) so I do know the area a bit, but would like some 'local knowledge'
I know that the area's I like are Quarry Hill, View St area, bits of Golden Square, generally the older parts of town (love older houses, anything post 40's leaves me cold) and we'd be hoping to rent in these areas for a year or so before buying. From what i can see QHill primary school is good, as is Spring Hill, Camp Hill, Kennington (but not so keen on the area housing wise) - anything to add? Violet St school seems to be a bit contradictory going by MySchool ratings v's other feedback...not sure what to make of that!
My kids are 8 and 5, DH is in IT, I'm a primary teacher (almost, roll on last Semester!).
Anyone else made the leap from city living to the country? We both grew up in a regional city, have lived in Melb for almost 20 years (Uni, careers etc) and now feel like the 'gloss' has worn off for us. We dislike the traffic (even though we live in a leafy outer suburb) and just feel the need to get some balance back into our lives....having said that, I'm slightly terrified as well!

I made the move to Echuca so not far.....don't know alot about housing or schooling in the area but love the shopping and restaurants.
Hope the move goes well

My mum lives in Ironbark, I'd love to live around there but I can't convince my husband to move.

Hi. I am a Bendigo local.
Do you have any specific questions? I have a child at one of the schools you mentioned and they are in grade 2 this year.
You might be better to visit the schools in the areas you are looking at living in rather than mySchool data, which I think is more based on naplan results and comparing them with 'like' schools etc, etc. And doesn't tell the whole story of a school. What size school is your child used to being in? That could also make a difference to your choice.
Spring Gully P.S. is in a 'newer' area (house ways anyway) of town than Camp Hill or Violet St.
Also, depends what you want to spend on housing - might decide what area of town you want to live etc
Very 'inner city', like Barkly St, Queen Street, View St for example is at the higher price end and not a lot of properties come up for sale there (normally). You could email a real estate agent with some questions about the areas you are interested in living perhaps.
Hope some of that helped

I am a Bendigo girl too, so fire away with the questions if you have any.
Whereabouts is your DH going to be working? The IT industry is a small one up here
All the areas you have listed are nice enough, I would be going for more Quarry Hill as I feel it would be a bit more family friendly than right in town.
Good luck, how exciting for you guys.

We're moving to Bendigo soon - we're currently looking at a block of land in Strathfieldsaye and hope to build as soon as we've sold our house. I can't wait!

I'm Bendigo too and DD is in grade 2 at one of the schools you mentioned and for the most part I am very happy with it. I grew up here we moved when I was second year primary school and while I still spend a bit of time in Melbourne I can't imagine living there. If you have any questions I'm happy to try and answer them.
PS My DH is in IT as well.
