Hmm...I understand your concern.
My first labour was 2hrs 45mins from first contraction to baby in arms. And I thought I was just having 'period pain type pre-labour' for the first hour of that. It was only that the midwife asked to do an internal and found I was already 8cm.
So naturally, I was a bit nervous with my second. However, I only live 400m from the hospital, my husband works five minutes away and my mum is ten minutes away. My OB told me not to stray too far from home towards the end, because I might have another fast labour.
As it turned out, I was induced, but had another 2hr 45 minute labour.
My friend has just had a baby after 20 minutes of active labour. With her second, she was hanging out the washing and literally 18 minutes later she had a baby in her arms. So with that history of fast labour, she was told to come in at the first sign of any action and not to wait around and labour at home for any length of time. She was also worried about giving birth by the side of the road!
