(I've never, ever been able to say that)!
Thanks Hunter4 and Mrs_Collins, I'm leaving it up to DH to decide if he wants to get an International Licences, but I've passed on the comments from the last thread.

I have 3 full days and 1 maybe 2 half days in Washington DC. My children will be 4, 6 and 8. How would you spend each day? It has my so confused there is so much there.

Lena, we've been tossing up whether or not to visit Washingon DC. The things I found that we would probably see were the National Air & Space Museum, the Mall including the Lincoln Memorial, the Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument, and the White House.
I'm not sure if we'll do it this time around, it seems awfully expensive to stay there and getting around with two young kids might be tricky. We might leave it until they are older.

*Lena* - We will be travelling to Washington for 3 days. The main items on my "to-do" list so far are the Air and Space Museum, White House and monuments, Georgetown Ghost Tour (for DH) and Washington Photo Safari (for me).
Has anyone had experience with Southwest Airlines? I was looking at booking our internal flights with them as we will earn enough points to get one leg for free.

Unfortunately I can't help with the Washington DC recommendations
I decided to do the Grand Canyon - fly and bus. I am happy with that as it ends up being 5 hours all up. I would have loved to do the helicopter but it was way too expensive.
All that I have now is my transfer from LA to West Hollywood. I have booked so many things that I am seriously starting to lose track.
Less than 2 weeks left for me

wow we are a chatty bunch, i havent been in for the last few days and we have moved along quickly.
anyway i got some money on friday and was tossing up whether to get $1k or $2 but thankfully decided on $2k as i think i got it just over US$1.
i normally leave getting the money till the last minute and then kick myself when it gets in the low .90.
still havent done anything about maui, but DH thinks maybe we should splurge and stay at the westin or sheraton.
so off to price them now.

DamiansMama who did you book your Grand Canyon tour with...I really need to organise something soon too..
Posted 25 July 2012 - 04:34 PM
I googled the Area 51 tour, looks great! I think DH would love to do that. I also never knew it existed but now I'd love to go out there and take a look around.
I also can't help with DC info as that's the place I got stumped on that resulted in wiping the East Coast completely off this next trip. It certainly isn't a budget-friendly place to stay. There are heaps of free activities but the accommodation was very expensive and DH turned his nose up at how many museums I had on the list of what to see.
8 months today for me. I remember when it was 8 months until the last trip, that was about when I decided to make a ticker. Next thing I knew, it was the day before! I'm sure time will fly by just as much as last time.
Plans for Alaska are coming together nicely When I have exact dates for next September, I'll pop them on here for the list ... Hawaii, Seattle and Alaska - all US states so I get to stick around a little longer after all

Lena - DH & I are staying 20 miles out of downtown DC in a hotel. We are stying 7 nights for $1100.
As far as attractions we are doing two days of DC seeing the sights and smithsonium(sp), 1 day tour cruise down the river and visit george washingtons house. we are then hiring a car and doing day trips to gettysburg, richmond (virginia), cumberand steam train ride and museum and a free day. They have lots of day trip tours from DC. All of the day trips we are doing is within 2hr drive from DC.
There is also a european themed fun park called busch gardens in williamsburg not too far from DC, it is part of sea world and you can do a character dining with elmo and other characters from sesame street.
What does everyone carry things around in everyday e.g. handbag? my boss has been to US before and she suggested getting an over the shoulder bag that was anti cut.
In response to the international drivers licence. I read on the US embassy website that you only NEED one if your licence is from a non english country but it a useful thing to have as an extra form of ID. Both DH and I are getting one as we wil both be driving.

We are going to DC and are staying at the Embassy Suites near Dupont Circle. It was not very expensive at all and comes with breakfast and a managers reception each night which is a light meal. We have a one bedroom apartment with 2 queen beds and a pullout sofa. We are staying 5 nights for under $1400. This is it here https://www.lollypotz.com.au/app/shop/check...dd20dae1daddb3a
We are doing the a couple of the Smithsonians, walking the Mall, shopping centre shopping in Pentagon City. The biggest problem is there is so much to do. Getting around is really easy with the Metro.
Highly recommend it. I have been before and loved just sitting in the Mall watching the squirrels!

We are flying V Australia does anyone have experience with them?
Posted 25 July 2012 - 09:13 PM
Washington DC: A night time tour of the monuments is worth it; they are just stunning. There is so much to do there that the three nights I had were not enough...
Posted 25 July 2012 - 10:00 PM
UncommonSense, we've flown with V Australia twice from Bris to LA and are flying with them again this next trip. Was there something specific you wanted to know? Ive also flown Qantas twice the same leg and I would choose V over Qantas if the price was similar.

The food was ok, I'm not a huge fan of airline food anyway but compared to other I've had it was pretty good. TV screens in the back of every head rest with new release movies, tv series and games etc.
Can you tell me more about the Hotel Menage? I've never heard of it before but it looks really nice, how did you find out about it?

Jo it was in the brochures we were given.. We were originally going to the Hyatt but insomnia had me looking up hotels the day after we'd been to the travel agent and I found it.. Figured it might be a little quieter for my parents and its closer to Disneyland.

Mrs_Cullen, Between Virgin and Qantas you get pretty much the same for your money. Meals, entertainment, baggage etc are the same, I just prefer Virgin as the planes are newer so not as noisey and shakey and found the seats a bit comfier (as much as they can be over 13-14 hours).
I do like my frequent flyer points from Qantas however the comfort level wins out over points!
UncommonSense, thanks for the info on the hotel, I've just emailed them to see if they have rooms to fit six!
