My child is about to turn four. How do you know if the time is right for a booster seat? Do you go by age or height? Thankyou!

Height and weight. If they can still fit in the baby seat, keep them there. It's definitely safer, so check what your current seat limits are. My 5 year olds are still in their baby seats and will be for a few months yet.

Both of my two hit the 20kg mark at some point after their 4th birthday. DS was only just 4; DD was around 4.5yo.

Legal requirement is a MINIMUM of 4yrs of age before going to a booster seat. Minimum height too is approx 100cm. So if you have a child over 4yrs but who is under 100cm you can't move them to a booster seat.
I just purchased a New SnS Compaq so my just turned 5yo can stay in a seat with inbuilt 5pt harness longer. He is 19kgs, 110cm and still has lots of room to grow in this seat.
My children have all been 5-6yrs before going to a booster seat. The longer you can leave them in a seat with inbuilt 5pt harness (so long as they fit correctly) the better.

DS2 is nearly six and still sits in a five point harness(as does my eight year old but as that is a special needs seat it doesn't count). He will stay in it until he outgrows it although he does occasionally sit in a booster in our second car.

With my girls they were moved when they reached the weight/high limits.
DD3.5 years. Moved her because she was almost 21kg.
DD2 has just turned 4. Was in a booster at 3 years because she was very tall and 20kg.
I would leave your child in a car seat if they are not over the height/weight limit.

I moved my son when he hit 4 years old. He met the legal requirements and his brother needed his seat.

My 6 1/2 year old is still in a five point harness (Maxi rider AHR). She is just over 18kg and 114cm tall.

The easiest way to think about things is that each 'graduation' in terms of seat is a 'downgrade' in safety.
eg. Safer RF then FF
Safer FF then Booster
Safer in Booster then no booster (if under 145cm - depending on the car).

DD1 (now 5y3m) was moved to a booster last year when she was 4.5 because she was too tall for the 5-point harness seat we had her in. At the rate she's growing, we expect she will outgrow the booster seat in height before she turns 7.
DD2 (currently 3.5) is still in a 5-point FF child seat. I think she'll be there for a couple more years, but she is starting to grow like her sister, so we'll just see how it goes.
We base the decision mostly on height. The seats can cope with 1-2kg more, so that's not a hard rule for us. We only move the kids on if they are too tall/big for the seats.

My 4.5 year old DS is only 14.5kg and 101 cm so will be in his 5 point harness in his Maxi Rider until he is 7 or 8 at the rate he is going!

We have the Maxi Rider AHR for DS 3½ 100cms & 16kgs, so he'll be in it until he is 7 or 8.
I should add too, I still have my 11yo DD in a booster with an adult seatbelt, but she is 135cm & 23kgs, so still within the limits of the seat.
We tried no booster & the seat belt in my car just about choked her...
In other cars she's fine though, so like IB says, it depends on the car.

We had to move DD1 to a booster at 2.5 as there just wasn't the range of seats that there is now and she got too tall and heavy for her Maxirider. I hated putting her in a booster then but that was all we could do.
DD2 is still in a harness in her convertible booster and looks like she's got years to go yet.
DD3 is also in a harness in her convertible booster (which we had to put her in at just over 18 months as she outgrew her Babylove EzySwitch). We bought a Babylove EzyCombo for her so there's plenty of room for growth so I don't expect she'll be out of it by 4. Thankfully her growth has slowed down now!
There is a great range of harnessed seats for older kids now. They are much taller than they were, so much easier to keep a child in a harness for longer.

My DS was 6.5 before I moved him to a booster seat. He is still in the booster seat and he is turning 9 next month.

Not until she's completely grown out of her current one. At 4 years old and only 14kgs, Im hoping she doesn't grow too tall for it because she'll never be too heavy. I want her in a 5pt harness as long as possible.

Based purely on height and weight. My DD moved out of her "baby" seat when she was just over 5yo and had hit 21kg.

I just moved my DS to a booster, he's 6 & a bit, 19kg & about 115cm tall.

Go by height.
DD1 moved to a booster at age 5 because we had a new baby and the older 2 girls stepped up in seats. Probably could have stayed in the full carseat longer. She only just got out of the booster at 10yrs 8mths - she is able to sit in our car without it, but in other cars the seatbelt is still wrong for her without a half booster cushion.
DD2 moved to a booster at age 8 And I'm thinking she will be in it for a while (only 117cm tall)
DD3 moved into her just recently at 5.5yrs, but is still in a full carseat in the other car. But only just, I am at the point of really needing to replace that one with a booster.

DS was in his Maxirider until he was about 5.5 and 20kg. He is now 7.5 and still rides in a booster. DD had to move into a booster just before she turned 4. She was 21kg so she had outgrown her FF seat by weight.

We also went by height and weight. DS grew out of it when he was about 3 and 3/4 (he's big). I would obviously have preferred longer (at least til 4) but we already bought him the biggest/tallest seat on the market. It is definitely safer to keep them in the seat they're in until they physically grow out of it, rather than move them up sooner because all the other kids are doing it. Might get a little pushback by seven or eight though, beforehand should be ok.

My 7yr old is still in a 5 point harness.... He's about 18kgs at the moment and will be in the seat u til he grows out of it height wise... So much safer.
