http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCHkqVbN3jgThis New York Senator really sums it up, don't you think? Do these reasons for not allowing marriage sound familiar? What do you think? Watch it all and if you like it, share it with everyone.

QUOTE (MsN @ 28/08/2011, 03:58 PM) To clarify for those who may not wish to watch the whole 8 minute speech.
Senator Evans is talking about inter-racial marriage being illegal in the US until 1967, and the terms that were used to describe why.
Using this as an example, he is arguing that this is no different to the arguments made against same sex marriage I.e that using such terms is equally bad in both situations.
This speech is from 2009, and is an interesting speech for gay marriage. Thanks MsN. The video is long, but well worth watching. Even just the 1st half.

My interracial marriage and children don't seem to have brought down society.
I support SS marriage but never really thought about it specifically in these terms. I think everyone deserves the same rights as I have. Amazing that in so many US states up until 1967 that people used the same sort of arguments against allowing interracial marriage.

QUOTE (la di dah @ 28/08/2011, 04:19 PM) The black community isn't known in the US for being very pro-gay generally nor particularly secular. It's not a Republican thing, overall. It's a socially conservative Democrat thing. I'm from a black city, and its proudly sapphire blue in terms of demographics of votes. Still plenty of issues with homophobia. I was talking more about the hypocrisy of someone whose marriage is interracial using the traditional arguments against interracial marriage to oppress a different group. The 'Republican' bit was because she also made the family she 'swapped' into put Republican signs up all over the front yard.

I am pro gay-marriage myself. I just must be really inured to the whole disconnect between stances on racial discrimination and anti-gay discrimination. The whole hypocritical thing just doesn't get much traction because, wait for it, its not the same. Just tired, I guess. Sorry.
