We would like to move our bathroom to another area. The area has plumbing in place but will need to be waterproofed etc.

It will be a small room (2.3x2.6) & we will be able to do the majority ourselves. My requirements are...
- frameless shower screen
- Freestanding bath
- toilet
- vanity
- large built in mirror cupboard
- basic white wall tiles
- undecided on floor tiles

I am hoping to keep it under $7000... am I crazy?! What did you spend on your bathroom reno? Any hints on good places to shop? I'm planning to visit the auctions but that's as far as I've got.

I may be delusional, but I think you can do it yourselves for that price. We paid $11K last year for a bathroom reno which was in the existing room & not moving any plumbing. We got our tiler & plumber to do it all for us. We tiled the entire room from ceiling to floor, a new vanity, a new mirror cabinet, toilet, taps etc. We kept the existing bath.

Where are you?
If in Sydney, go to www.renovationd.com.au
They are great and will give you a discount for buying everything at once, and they will often throw in free delivery!
We got a freestanding bath, frameless shower screen, 1500mm stone top vanity, all tapware, rain shower head and toilet from them, less than $2500 delivered.
Tiles from a place in Smithfield, called Tile Factory Outlet. Gorgeous large white gloss wall tiles, charcoal floor tiles and some feature small tiles, less than $400 from memory.
Our plumber did the necessary stuff, but DH tiled the room himself and installed everything else. Our room was about the same size as yours I think.
You can absolutely do it for under $7k.

My war paint is Sharpie ink
We've spent quite a lot more than that but we aren't doing any of the work ourselves, got new everything and moved pretty much all the plumbing. No time and as it's our only bathroom we weren't willing to be without it for longer than the 2 week turnaround we are getting by going with a reno company.

My estimates for what you are getting are:

frameless shower screen - we've spent about $850 but ours is a single custom bifold panel for an open shower design. Without the hinge $600 would have been enough.
Freestanding bath - varies considerably. Ours is built in for $400
toilet - we have none in the bathroom but spent $400 on ours last year
vanity - $700 for a wall hung with two drawers and china top. Shop around. The quality can be very poor and I found you don't always get what you pay for.
large built in mirror cupboard - hated most of these so got one from Ikea for $300. I'm giving a nod to the restoration style look so I loved some of these on the Schotts website.
basic white wall tiles
undecided on floor tiles - our overall tile budget has come in at $800. This is reasonably easy to estimate. Just calculate your area and multiply by $40 a square metre I reckon. If that's too much then you can shop around for tiles on sale etc. and might be able to find something for half that price.

You haven't allowed anything for tapware. This can cost quite a bit, depending on what you want. I managed to do ours for $600 and then splurged on a double waterfall + hand shower for $500.

As for where to shop, depends where you are. I'm in WA so feel free to quiz me if that's relevant. I was pretty happy with Parkwood Plumbing Centre. Good service and almost everything in stock or quickly available. I never would have come across them if they weren't mentioned to me but I'm glad I went there.

I did our bathroom in our new house about 1.5 years ago and spend under $7k original.gif

I got our bath off eBay! It can take a while but if you keep going back and doing a search every couple of days something might pop up! The bath I wanted was just under $2k but I kept checking eBay and eventually the one I wanted popped up! A guy was selling it because he'd bought it for his new house and the builders had accidentally made his bathroom too small so it didn't fit. It was still brand new in the box and I got it for $850 original.gif

For our new kitchen, bathroom, laundry and toilet I went to Good Kitchen and Bathroom. They import from China, but they have very good quality stuff, and it's very very well priced. Here's their website http://goodkitchenbathroom.com.au/

I have a solid granite kitchen and laundry and it cost a third of the price of my parents laminate one that they had designed by a local kitchen place!!

For the frameless shower screen and mirror I went to stegbar. The mirror is huge and was only about $200 and the guy who came to measure up actually talked me into a semi-frameless shower screen as it changed the price from $2k to $1k.

Hope some of that helps original.gif

It is hard to give a breakdown of prices from our two new bathrooms as it was part of a major renovation. However, we supplied the bathroom fixtures, organised the tiling and painting etc. The builder just did the plumbing, waterproofing, structure, windows and doors.

Main bathroom

The tiles were @$35 per m/sq and bought from auction. The bath cost $300 from a Reece outlet shop, as was the sink ($150). The vanity was done bespoke by a cabinet maker and not that expensive. Tapware was sourced mainly from overseas (UK - much much cheaper than $au). One overhead shower was bought from auction. The tapware is $$$ brands like Hans Grohe. Glass and mirrors not cheap but they were custom made.

With our ensuite, marble tiles and marble mosaic tiles ($10 per m/sq and $10 per mosaic sheet + wall tiles @ $8 m/sq). Tapware sourced overseas cheaper (good quality). Sink bought from an outlet shop for $100. Toilet was expensive @ $1000 but good brand and has cistern inside wall to give more space. Glass for shower was custom made. Mirror was also custom made.

With our powder room, a vanity with sink (Cibo) bought for $500 with RRP $2500. Toilet bought online auction @$300 (had not visited the bathroom outlet at that stage). Glass silve tiles for @ $10 a sheet.

All toilet roll holders, toilet brushes etc were bought for @ $5-10 - some stuff like soap dispensers i got free.

We spent a lot of time sourcing good quality but cheap price materials. If you are a canny buyer you can source some good stuff. Always negociate prices to get savings.

we bought most of our gear from Renovation Boys. We bought tiles ourselves. Renovation Boys also put us in contact with a builder/plumber crew who did the work for us.

We have the bathroom and laundry renovated for around $16-$17K, new everything. But no plumbing was moved. New power points installed in bathroom. The bathroom was about 2.9 x 2.5, IIRC?? It have a bathtub, shower (little half-wall thing between shower and bath), toilet, vanity and shaving cabinet installed into wall to give a flush finish. We went with a semi-frameless shower, much cheaper and given that the shower and bath are adjoining, it was a better idea.

We renovated a small bathroom in our last house for around that price. We got a really nice deep bath and had the shower put over the bath with a fixed glass screen. A new cabinet and mirror and a new ceramic toilet. We did not have to move any plumbing. It was all striped out and rewateproofed and gyprocked etc for that price. Oh and we picked large white tiles which looked fantastic with a lot less grout to clean and milk coffee colored floor tiles.

We didnt do any of the work ourselves employed a guy that did it all. He organised someone to come in and do the gyprocking though.
