DS is 19 months old and is very regular with his morning poo! Because of this, I thought I would try putting him on the toilet for this one. I have tried 3 days in a row and he thinks it's fun at first, but once the poo is really ready to come out, he starts crying hysterically. I end up taking him off and putting his nappy on, and he goes within 2 mins!

Is there anything else I can be doing to encourage him? I don't want him to be holding it in and crying as that can't be good for him.

Many thanks

Am I taking the wrong approach?

If you want him to get the idea of not pooing in his nappy, you could try nappy free time and see what happens e.g. does he get distressed? does he let you know when he has done it? does he try to find somewhere to do the poo? Answers to these questions may help you decide how you want to procede. Also, a potty may be less daunting to start with.

Good luck!

Moving on ...
My 21mo has recently TT'ed. He was doing great with wees for at least a week before he got the hang of poos. I started taking him into the toilet with me and he would watch me put his poo into the toilet - then he flushed it away. Seemed to make him realise that the toilet is where poo is supposed to go.

Puss,

Not sure if you tried this but how about reading a book to your DS while he is on the toilet or letting him play with a favourite toy. It may be enough to distract him and allow him to relax and "let go" of the poo into the toilet.

Also, have you considered using a potty? It may be less intimidating and you can try sitting him somewhere other than the bathroom (may be in front of a window, again to distract him and help him relax).

Kami.
