You can easily believe Julius Caesar existed, while at the same time NOT believing that he is the descendant of gods (which is what quite a few ancient civilizations believed of their rulers)
By the same token, quite easy to believe that Jesus Christ existed as a person 2000 years ago, without believing that he was god's son. All that is documented is that he was a real person. Everything else is hearsay. FTR I do believe in God and I do believe that Jesus rose from the dead, but can quite easily see why people don't. Until someone can prove that God doesn't exist, I will just go on happily believing in him/her.
Just like the same book says that we are all descended from 2 people (so therefore must be catastrophically inbred) and somehow something that happened untold years ago has been reported by someone who probably was just putting it together from myths passed down within his culture. Same book says the world is only around 10000 years old, while all evidence found points to the earth being billions of years old, and we are descended from small ape-like creatures. In this case, I believe in science, as do many many Christians that I know.
It's possible to believe and not believe in things all at the same time. Freaky.

Can we also ask here why people DO believe in god? That subject fascinates me
Because for me, something as miraculous as our universe, the big bang, and evolution are too wonderful to be random. I see God in things all the time. Yesterday I saw God in the storm coming in over the Adelaide Hills, and in the kookaburras sitting outside shaking their wings in the rain.

To quote Robert Heinlien, "Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help."
Family is a crutch.
Friends are a crutch.
Therapists are a crutch.
Alcohol/drugs/food are a crutch.
I think very few of us could actually stand without crutches, no matter what they are.
