I've recently invested in a kindle because I kept hearing about these great books you can get for .99c which are rarely anything special but for the price you pay are more than worth it...

Well so far I've read a couple of readable books - and a LOT of crap.

So does anyone have any recommendations for something I can read that will keep me intrigued enough to make an extremely boring evening, not quite so boring?

I don't expect anything fantastic - I just know that there are SOME pretty good books out there, and really don't want to keep wasting my money (even if they are only .99c each!) on sifting through all the rubbish...

I'm into most genres, and am always keen to try something different, so anything you like, please tell me about it!

John Locke. Have read and loved all of his books. He has three series - Donovan creed series, Emmett Love series and Dani Ripper series.

I would start with the Creed series. It is quite quick and easy to read with a little humor thrown in.

I'm not sure if it's self published or not (though I think it is) but The Old Man and the Road by Nick Cole was pretty damn awesome. Pretty sure it's a Kindle file for 99cents. Cant' be too sure because I have a Kobo!

Ben's Challenge by Linda Visman. Really got into it in the second half. It's written for 10 year old boys really but was very nostalgic as it's set in country Australia, where I grew up.

If you haven't already sign up to pixel of ink...they send a daily email of free and cheap books!

I would recommend End of Mae - by Angela Smith

Mine. It's brilliant wink.gif I'll give you a copy if you like.

Agree with PP that Pixel of Ink is a good source of freebie finds. Self published stuff is really hit and miss in my experience, but with freebies if you download it and it's rubbish you've lost nothing. Just do the author a favour and go back and leave a review of anything you do read, that's generally why we do freebie promos.

Father Dougal for the Papacy!
I steer clear of self published books unless they come with a strong recommendation from someone I trust. I've spent too much of my life reading slushpiles to want to pay someone for the privilege of reading their unedited novel.

dearauthor.com is good for reviews and for information about deals. They do recommend some self published novels but tend to promote the cheap deals done by publishing houses.
