I run disco birthday parties in Melbourne so I can't get you to come to my venue but I have HEAPS of tips for disco parties.

First up put out some disco colouring in sheets & coloured pens on a table so when the kids get tired, or if they're initially shy they have something they love to do. There are heaps you can print straight off the net. Basically that will take care of the first 30mins of your party. Use your garage because it's easy to make dark or close the curtains in a playroom. Disco lights are really cheap at KMart, $10 or under, you only need 1 or 2. If you have sing star or even pretend microphones (look in the $2 shops) the kids will feel like pop stars.

You'll only need a few games because they'll be dancing and singing and making their own fun. For Limbo you can just use a broom handle with a feather boa wrapped around it or even a skipping rope (there is always 1 or 2 kids who want to help hold the limbo pole instead of joining in so you'll have helpers).
Musical statues is a favourite and at 6yrs I'd do a pass the parcel. You don't have to wrap the prizes, have a pretty bag they dip their hands into (no mess!)

Make sure you have drinks on hand throughout the party as dancing is thirsty work. Keep the food simple. Fairy bread, chips, lollies, fruit platter, party pies/sausage roills. You're all done!

I'm sure whatever you do you'll have a great party
Cheers

Hire a fairy.
At 6, they are still young enough for it. Both my older girls had a fairy at their 6th birthday (FYOS), and there were a few other fairy parties at friends places that year as well.

The fairy turns up, she did a bit of magic show, had some bubble games. Face painting, pass the parcel. She stayed for the cake, then left. The girls all ate, then just happily played for the last 1/2 hour or so.

We did similar to the pp, but for DD's 5th birthday. We hired a fairy who was amazing. She was a very skilled ventriloquist, did puppet show, magic tricks, fun stories, face painting etc. We held it in the back yard so set up and clean up was really easy, and all I had to do was prepare food. The kids were so entertained that they barely ate anyway! The fairy also provided party bags so I didn't have to bother with that either. She was so good that several of the parents took her card to book her in the future! The kids absolutely loved it.

Thanks for all your tips. Thinking we could pull off a disco party at home or even a fairy party.

Strawberry- Are you in Sydney? If so can you PM me her details please.

For my DD's 6th birthday last year she had a pretend sleep over. The girls all came over in their pjs and brought a pillow with them. They played a few games, watched a movie and ordered in pizza. The girls were then picked up after a couple of hours.

I also agree to get a fairy/entertainer.

My 6yo is FYOS and so is having a fairly largish friends party (i.e.. 25-30 kids) this year whereas normally it is just relatives. We booked an kids entertainer (woohoo entertainment) and was just over $200 for 1.5hrs with face painting, balloon shapes, games to music and i think pass the parcel. So all I am doing is a party table with some party food.
