Hi, probably a question for the teachers among us .... What grade does the concept of multiplication usually get introduced? What grade to kids generally start doing multiplications (basic) in their heads, I'm thinking number stories like 3x4=?. thanks

My son is six and I'm teaching him the concept of groups- he's in grade 1. I use to teach grade 3 and they understood the concept of multiplication and did number stories as well to help with explaining and illustrating their understanding of the concept and most students could do mentally- 2x 3x 5x 9x 10x at a minimum by end of yr 3.

The Australian Curriculum has slightly changed when math concepts are introduced so grade 1 and 2 teachers will be able to share more.

My boys both started in year 2, but I had started doing it at home a bit earlier as they are very good with maths and got bored quickly with addition and subtraction. My eldest started division last year in year 3.

We start teaching it as 'groups of' or 'rows of' in Year 1. The more able children will then substitute the words for the x symbol but that's not expected in Year 1.

DD's in year 1 and though I don't think they've started on these yet, she can do the sum you mentioned in the OP easily. I think she has a few basic multiplication sums in her homework (which I think comes from year 2... it's not year 1 work anyway).

Basic 5x 2x and 10x was advanced yr 1
