Hi, I have been inspired by 1 of the talented ladies in the Newbie Sewing group who made a lovely sun hat to make some for my boys, and I am now on the lookout for a pattern. Anyone know of any good hat patterns for boys?

Thanks Cara

I haven't a pattern for a sun hat, but they are pretty easy to do. You need a round circle for the crown. Measure your son's head or try one on in kmart to get the size. Then you will need a flat strip of material to go around the crown, and another round strip for the brim. For my daughter, I had a 50cm crown (remember to add seam allowances), 5cm rise, and 5cm brim.

You will also need some interfacing to stiffen the brim.

To put together, iron the interfacing onto the brim. Attach the brim and the rise together. Sew back seam, press out your seam, then top stitch. This is then attached to the crown, which is the hardest step.

I also lined my one, by making the lining the same what, then attaching it to the main hat.

I hope this makes sense. If not, a company called Wild Ginger has a free pattern program, which has a pattern for a sunhat on it, that can be customised to your measurements.

I am a newbie sewer - basic skills is all I have and I use the Kwik Sew 3079 to make hats for my DS. It also has pants, shorts and a shirt. I add elastic to the hat to keep it on him!

It's really easy to make and really easy to customise it to your child (contrasting colours, embelishments, etc.)

If you go to this site - Wild Ginger - you can download a program that will design a hat pattern for you. You can just input the head size and brim width you want and the program generates the pattern to print out.

Thankyou ladies for the replys. I realise I should probably try and make my own pattern but need a bit more sewinfg confidence first blush.gif .

TigerFilly & MummytoThomasandAmy- Thankyou for putting me onto the Wld Ginger site it looks great. Unfortunatly it appears to be windows based and I am on a Mac sad.gif .

Sealeys- The pattern sounds great, I will keep my eye out for it, its good to have some specific to look for as I do not get to places that sell patterns often (I live regional Vic) and when I do my boys allow very limited shopping time.

Thanks again to all!

I use Butterick 4531 - it's got lots of different hats, and the biggest size is huge!

ETA: Just looked it up and it's out of print... B5056 look similar though.

Thanks for the replys ladies. I ended up going for what my local shop had, they sell Simplicity so I got 5581 which has hat, shirt and shorts for boys and men (the men ones will not be happening) but the shorts and hat look just great.

Mylittlepony- The Butterick pattern sounds great I will try and find it online. Many thanks.
